CARY — “It’s good to be
back.”
Roxboro native and profes
sional golfer Jim Thorpe spoke
those words Saturday morning
prior to teeing off in the second
round of the Champions Tour
annual stop in Cary at the SAS
Championship.
Thorpe was addressing a fan
standing near the first tee. The
fan called out to Thorpe and said,
“It’s good to have you back, Jim.”
Thorpe, 62, missed a year of
competition on the Champions
Tour after he was sentenced in
January of 2010 to one year in
federal prison for failing to pay
income taxes.
Thorpe began his 12-month
sentence in April of 2010 at a
minimum-security federal pris
on in Montgomery, Ala. He was
released from that facility in late
January of this year and served
the remainder of his sentence at
a halfway house in Florida.
The prison sentence was hand
