The car seat safety checks scheduled at elementary and pre-schools in the county are part of a child safety seat awareness initiative Pointer created. Through the first week in De cember, parents picking up their children from elementary or pre schools in Person County will be given information on car seat safety and have the opportunity to have their car seats checked for proper installation. The scheduled school visits for the safety checks are being performed through an initiative formed by Person County Schools (PCS) Lead Nurse Shannon Point er, as part of her graduate stud ies internship. As part of her in ternship with the Person County Health Department, Pointer was charged with coming up with an initiative to address a problem or health concern in the county. Pointer chose to focus on re ducing childhood injury through awareness, in order to “reduce injuries and keep kids safe, es pecially during this time of busy travel seasons,” she said. The child safety seat aware ness initiative is a collaboration between the health department, PCS, Roxboro Fire Department (RFD), N.C. Highway Patrol and Partnership for Children.
