THIS FKEE PRESS, SOUTHERN PINES, N. 0., SEPT. 9, 1899. THE FREE PRESS. Y-V. ENTERED AT THE POSTOFFICE IN SOUTHERN PINES, N. C, AS 2nd CLASS MAIL MATTER. E. D. OSLIN, EDITOR. SATURDAY,.... SEPT. 9, 1899. SHORT EDITORIAL NOTES There are advantages pos sessed by the people of this county for the growing of fruits over those of any other county in the state. Remem ber this assertion when this is known as the banner fruit county of North Carolina. A dispatch from Kockford, Illinois, dated Aug. 30, says: "Mayor Brown and Chief of Police Bargen were in Chi cago tosday arranging for transportation to the JSouth of the negroes who came here to work with a railroad bal lasting crew, and have been on the city's hands for severe al days. The colored men will probably leave to-morrow .The Coroners Jury will on Saturday resume the investi gation into the deaths of Miles Lee and George Woodward, negroes who were killed," These poor negroes ,were induced, by offers of good pay in cash to go from the South to Illinois to wprk to earn their daily bread They were assailed, two at least killed, and, practically back ed by the Republican Govern . or of that State were denied the privilege of working. Now, to prevent them from becoming public charges, the city authorities of- JRockford have determined to furnish them tickets to their former Southern home, which the poor darkies most gladly ac cept, And yet the South "persecutes" the negro. Ra leigh Post. Those who deny power to the press will please observe that Alger has been driven into retirement and the Pres ident is explaining his Philip pine policy. The hardest tone yields to the constant current, and there is need to convince and placate before it is asked that the eighty millions be duplicated. It might have been enough but for the payment to Spain on I- i -T- 1 wum we are now losing a S half million daily with some , valuable lives for good meas -lure. Exchange. GRADUALLY GROWING BETTER. Talking with one of our leading merchants a few days ago we were pleased to learn that the annual per centage of trade coming to Southern Pines, is gradually increasing and that, ,in his opinion, there must be an increase this sum mer of at least 8 per cent. This .establishes the fact that people in different and remote sections of the county as well as adjoining counties, are realizing that in Southern Pine's they can get what they want; and it also warrants the assertion that our town is gradually becoming a trad ing center for the majority of people within a radius of thirty miles. This is a pleasing state of affairs, and if our business men will unite to advertise a little more and make a more specific bid for the business of this section, the rate of in crease will show up to a much better advantage when next we wish to make a comparison. And we call attention to the announcement of a Trad ers1 Convention in another column; it has .been started by those whc5intend to make a ,4a? successfw it if possible, andi the aid of the business people is most respectfully asked for. It seems the Jewett woman has found it impossible to draw crowded houses with the Baker family and has sub sided. Even in Boston some people get their deserts before they die; to such as the Jew ett oblivion is a double death, says an exchange. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they can not reach the diseased portion of the ear. 'mere is only oneway to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Vub tachiun Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflam mation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condi tion, hearing will be destroyed for ever nine cases out of ten are caus d by catarrh, which is noth ing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dol lars for any case of Deafness (caus ed by catarrh) that can not be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free. F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, 0.
