g"i - ' r CrV COMMISSIONERS. Regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners held Thursday evening Jlay 24th, Mayor Edwin Gladmon in the chair. Commis sioners present II. L. Thurston, F. II. Weaver, J. IV. Elliott, E. D. Oslin and R E. Geyer. Minutes of last meeting read and approved. Dr. G. II. Sadelson was umni mously re-elected a member of the School Board. By-Law com mittee reported progress and or . dered to give final reading at next meeting. E. D. Oslin was elected Mayor pro tern for the ensuing year. Voted that J. McN Johnson be employed as Attorney for the town at a salary of $50.00 per year. Voted that J. C. Black as police man and Street Commissioner should be paid the sum of $16.00 per month for each position, he to furnish himself with a policeman's uniform to be approved by the Mayor. Voted that the Mayor be chairman oi a committee to meet Prof. Seagrave.and his astro nomical party on May 26th, and to oiler them the freedom of the city. Voted that a committee of three be appointed to appear before the Election Commissioners at Car thage on June 1st to present the petition of the Town of Southern Pines to be set apart as a separate voiingA'precinct. The Niagara Grape and Fruit Company are putting on an adittional building at their packing house and other wise making ready for hand ling their big crop of fruit. That was a splendid little celebra tion of Childrens Day at the Congre gational church Sunday evening. The little ones were happy and in great earnest and 'mid a profusion of flowers said their pieces well. We have said that it is the men and women of a city who determine its character, and the boys and girls of to-day will be the men and women of Southern Pines in a few years. The firm is a member of the Stock, Cotton and Produce Exchanges, and of the Chicago Stock Exchange, a'nd has branch offices in about thirty cities throughout the United States.
