We have had our pencil sharpened several days to wish our readers and friends a happy New Year, at the be ginning of this twentieth cen tury, and still we have had to read that a prominent statis tician has discovered this is really 1905. But at the risk of being out ; of date we are going to say .it he Free Press is strictly a twentieth century institu- one and all a happy and prosperous New Year. We have nothing but kind words and the best of wishes for everyone; if we have friends and we claim hundreds--we prize them; if we have enemies we do not know them, at the same time we believe in expansion to the extent that our twentieth century heart is able to wish them good luck and a change of heart. A despatch from Richmond siys: "The Seaboard Air Line Florida Limited Express made the runofllG miles, from this city to itidgeway Junction, Wednesday afternoon in two hours and four teen minute. This includes seven slops. The average speed was about one mile in one and one sixth minutes, counting slops-" Mr. E. T. Sohaffner, of Pittsburg, who is spending the winter with us writes back to his home paper, ' Grit' and says: ''Southern Pines is better tnan I expect ed to find it Why, they have water works, tanks, fire plugs, a volunteer fire com pany, electric light in almost every house and cottage and street lights, good stores and hotels and enterprising citi zens. I have walked up two and one-half miles and re turned day before yesterday to see a terpentine still and I felt first-class after the walk."
