Schoncke, of Rocka- way Beach, L. I., N. Y., who has been for several month at Glenwood Cottage, left Saturday for a short stay stay at Jackson Springs, in com pany with Mrs. C. J. Grover. C. H. Carstens, of Coudersport, Pa., who was formerly the business partner of P. H. Beck in that place, who has been suffering severely from inflama tory rheumatism for several years, will come to Southern Pines with W. F. Junge and spend the winter here. Southern Pines Lodge, No. 108, K. of P., held on last Friday the most enthusiastic meeting held for several months. Under the head "The Good of the Order," many good speeches were made and the meeting was a most enjoyable one. The prospects for the early future of the lodge are very bright. S. S. Thomas and wife returned home this morning from a visit to Brooklyn N. Y. J. A. Keith, a well known mer chant of Vass, was a Free Press vis itor yesterday. Alex Cameron reports the recovery of his mule advertised as lost, in last week's Free Press. There will be another meeting of the fruit growers at Dr. Swett's office this evening at 7 30 o'clock. Moll, of New Hampshire, who has spent the summer here testing the climate, reports that he is well satisfied finding the heated term very pleasant, and comfortable. The Southern Pines Improvement society will have its regular Septem ber meeting next Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock, at the residence of R. M. Couch, Railroad street. Mr. Weaver brings back with him a handsome thoroughbred trotting mare, Jessie which was raised on his father's farm, Deputy Sheriff J. M. Tyson went to lyaurinburg Wednesday to receive from Chief of Police Herbert, of that place, a negro by the name of Robt. Jennings, who was charged by Walter Parker, of Manly, before Sqnire C.W. Shaw, with stealing cows. Jennings waived examination and in default of $200 bail was sent to the county jail to await court trial. A combination of moonlight and shower on Wednesday evening gave to the people of this section a chance to see a very rare phenomenon in the shape of a moon-bow, or moon-light rain-bow. It was very clear and dis tinct and lasted fully 15 minutes. Sailors see them frequently on the ocean, but the land-lubber is fortu nate if he sees one in a life-time. The supervising committee of the Experimental Farm of the North Carolina State Horticultural Society held a called meeting today. The com mittee, consisting of J. Van Ljndley, B. Von Herff, P H. Beck and H. T. Pettv. met in the committee rooms of Superintendent A. D. Mc Nair's residence, made an inspection of the farm, then returned to Southern Pines and held a regular business meeting in the parlors of the Southern Pines hotel, during which they heard the report of the Superintendent and the reports of special committees, also considered what steps are to be taken for experiments with irrigation. The ice-cream social given by tne Southern Pines Volunteer Fire De partment and the friends of the or gination on last Tuesday evening on the verandas of the Sanitarium was a success and netted the fire laddies $18.58 toward the purchase of a hook and ladder truck. The amount col lected by the subscription committee, in addition to this, was $5.90 cash; several dollars more were subscribed but not yet collected. At the regular meeting held Wednesday evening, it was voted to post a note of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen, not members of the department, who as sisted with the supper and to prepare and present to them suitably inscribed badges of the event. H. C. Berry, who spent the past 1 A 1 4 season nere as a neaitn-seeKer, re ports that he has so far recovered his health and is doing so well at his home in Uniondale, Pa., that he does not deem it necessary to return here the coming season. He has author ized P. H. Beck to sell his household goods and apply the proceeds to set tlement of some unfinished business. Joseph Taylor, of Fall River, Mass., arrived last Saturday and is now at Prospect House. Mr. Taylor is a health-seeker and intends remaining throughout the season.
