Mr. John Powell is receiving the congratulations of his many friends; its a girl, and she arrived Monday last to make her permanent abode. All well, Jas. Swett gave a very enjoyable dance Tuesday evening at .the Inhal atory building to the young people of town. The occasion was enlivened by the presence of the cornet band, which aided in furnishing the music. Mrs. C. E. Peck and Miss France left Tuesday night for a visit with friends and relatives in Atlanta, Ga. ar.d Chattanooga, Teun. Their many friends in Southern Pines wish them a very pleasant trip. The Oriental Concert Company of colored people gave two performances in the Opera house this week. It was somewhat of a pleasing feature of songs and plays, giving the Southern Pines people a pleasant diversion from a very warm spell in August. It is the furniture that was in the Prospect House which Mr. Powell has for sale. It is stored away in the Raymond cottage on Penn. avenue, and will be sold at Special bargains. Give him a call. We were called upon last week by our good friend Mr. B. H. Berry, to assist in getting away with some of his fine Elberta peaches. They were perfect in size, flavor, etc., and being grown under cover were absolutely free from insects. John and Angus Kelly, J. M. Ty son, H. Weber, and Tom Burgess went as delegates from our Volunteer Fire department to the Tournament at Durham last Tuesday. For want of a reel our fire boys could not take part in the races. FROM LAKEVIEW. Mr. J. T. Hodge of Pinebluff visit ed Lakeview yesterday. Mrs. Sanderson and Miss Scarboro of Southern Pines spent today in Lakeview, being guests at the new Lakeview hotel. Hammock picnic parties are in vogue at Lakeview. Dnring the past week a number of persons have spent the day in hammocks tied among the beautiful shade trees which skirt the edge of Crystal Lake.
