GUjp Baily Star Hppl Residents Find Community in Orchestra BY DALE CASTLE STAFF WRITER The conductor opens the black folder with “MAESTRO” written boldly across it and arranges the music on his stand. He claps his hands twice to stop the low hum of voices in the room. “Let’s go,” he says. The difference in this orchestra rehearsal is its 55 performers all nonprofessional musicians from the community. The Chapel Hill Village Orchestra is made up of doctors, lawyers, professors, students, engineers, secretaries and people from many other lines of work who prac tice every Thursday in Hill Hall for a public concert at the end of each semester. Susan Strobel, a charter member of the orchestra and secretary to the University athletic director, remembers when the or chestra started in Phillips Junior High School 11 years ago. Since music department conductors di rected the orchestra, it moved to Hill Hall. The maestro raises his hands and says, “Remember, this is for fun. ” He moves the magic wand, and the room fills withmusic. Tapping his foot to keep count in the music during a momentary break, Ernest Sunas, a retired research chemist from Durham, suddenly raises the violin and eases the bow across the strings. And one, two, three, four,” he says as he lifts the wand, and the music begins again as if a switch were turned on. Duke pharmacology Professor Elliot Mills likes the noncompetitive atmosphere. He used to play the cello but now plays the bass. “I consider (the orchestra) a great bless ing because you don’t have to be a profes sional to play.” But professionals are not excluded from the orchestra, said conductor Donald Oehler, a UNC associate professor of mu sic. “Someone might come to me and say, ‘l’m really concerned that I can’t play the music. ’ The professionals can lead the less experienced.” Oehler stops the music again. “We can not do this piece without trombones. We need a trombone search. We also need percussions, but we’ll add them later. Now strings all strings from the beginning.” For some, an orchestra can be intimi dating at first. Creadick has known about the orches tra for a while, but said she joined when she learned Oehler was conducting. The music stops once more. “Don’t read the notes,” Oehler says, opening his arms. “Read everything. It’s not Monday morning.” Oehler likes to be known first as a clari netist, but has directed the University Chamber Players, the Switzerland study abroad, the Chapel Hill Chamber Music workshop and the N.C. Wind Quintet. “I try to make it fun,” he said. “I’ll work them hard, but in a good way. There’s a spirit you get from an orchestra like this one.” The maestro squints at the last row of violinists. “How are you doing back there? The first time is always the worst. Once more, everybody.” Cathy and Pat Gallarelli saw an ad in the newspaper announcing the first re hearsal, and the couple decided to come together. Pat Gallarelli plays bassoon and Cathy Gallarelli plays the violin. As the orchestra finishes, Oehler looks at his watch. “Well, I could ask you to play out these last five minutes, but instead, as you’re packing up, stop by for a minute. “There are a lot of new faces, and I’d like to get to know all of you.” |m| IjNIE BE j s lAI u kd F j LIEI EI T I IsleltltMolrlilpMtlelelnlsl 64 Carriers: abbr. 1 2 [I p HP 6 7 8 5 HP®"" 11 12 13 .
