ttKfpßailgularSM Jackets Next Test for UNC Game and time: No. 14North Carolina at Georgia Tech. Kickoff is 12:05 p.m. Site: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta. Playing surface: AstroTurf. TV/Radio: The game will televised re gionally on ABC (WTVD). The Tar Heel Sports Network will provide live radio coverage. The flagship stations are WCHL (1360-AM) and WZZU (93.9-FM). 1993 records: North Carolina is 6-1 overall, 3-1 ACC; Georgia Tech is 2-3,1-3. Series: Georgia Tech leads 13-12-3. Last meeting (1992): North Carolina 26, Georgia Tech 14. Personnel update: North Carolina SS Kevin Addis is out for the season. FB Chris Watson is doubtful. DT Riddick Parker is questionable. Georgia Tech OT Gary Brown is out. FS Jimmy Clements and CB Eric Billingslea are questionable. Georgia Tech offense: Here’s a matchup: The league’s second worse pass ing team against a secondary that has al lowed 1,270 yards in four ACC games so far this season. Quarterback Donnie Davis has com pleted 56 percent of his passes, but Tech averages only 151.2 yards per game in the air. Tech is the only ACC team other than Duke without a receiver ranked amongst the league’s 15 most prolific this season. Freshman Derrick Steagall, recruited as a quarterback, leads the team with 15 catches, gaining 166 yards. Throw out 37- and 38-point scoring outburst against Division I-AA defenses (Furman and, well, Maryland belongs in this category, too), and the Yellow Jackets have scored 27 points in three games—all losses. Those three games came against threeoftheACC’stopfourteams—Florida State, Virginia and Clemson. The Yellow Jackets have a good rush ing attack, led by tailback William Bell, the team’s ninth all-time leading rusher with almost 1,600 yards. Dorsey Levens had 130 yards versus Maryland. North Carolina offense: UNC head coach Mack Brown wants more consis tency from his offense. Tailback Curtis Johnson, who leads the league with 783 yards, is a couple of games away from breaking 1,000 yards. And Leon Johnson, with 10 touch downs, leads the ACC in scoring. His TD sprints include runs of 62 and 57 yards. But last week’s big-play performer was Jason Stanicek, the ACC Player of the Week on offense. Stanicek, as local news papers have pointed out 3,469 times, has the uncanny ability to flick the ball on the option at the last possible second. He was 12 of 22 passing for 172 yardslast week and rushed for 61 yards. Stanicek, who calls himself “too slow to get hit cleanly,” was a third-down conver sion machine against the Demon Dea cons . In the first half, he converted six third downs into first down, three on the ground and three in the air. With Stanicek on the EXAM PACKS NOW AVAILABLE 810 11.1 GEOL 11.1 810 11.2 GEOL 11.2 810 45.1 HIST 64 810 62 MUS4S CHEM 11.2 NUTRI4O CHEM6I PHARS2 CLAS2O P0L186.1 ECON 10.8 PSYCH 10.1 ECON 100.2 SOCIO.I Be On Your Way To An "A" Cflass 933-8222 Notes IlhtujgK v *ll ; fOft. | I f + ®r rf\e^ AS. |BBaESBnBBEas pmuAMU i ' I field, UNC was 9 of 13 on third down conversions. Georgia Tech defense: The Yellow Jackets may go down in history as the team that blanked the Red Storm. That’s right sports fans. Georgia Tech shut out Maryland’s potent Run and Shoot offense last week 38-0. That’s a shame for Maryland fans: Letting up just 38 points is a milestone for the Terp defense. One reason for the shutout: Bill Lewis’ defense is ranked first in the ACC in sacks (per games played), a stat that concerns Brown. But 10 of Tech’s 17 sacks came against Maryland. Ten Jackets have recorded sacks this season. OLB Tom Johnson (6-foot-5,241 pounds)leadsTechwithfour.Fellow OLB Marion Williams (6-2, 209), is tied for fourth place on Tech’s all-time career sack list with 16. North Carolina defense: Gamblers probably aren’t happy with the UNC defense’s performance last week. Getting outscored 22-0 in the fourth quarter didn’t hurt UNC’s chances of winning, but cer tainly damaged anybody who bet against the 22-point spread. “You score a certain amount of points and the other team doesn’t have many, I think it’s the natural tendency to let up a little,” said comerback Sean Crocker, who had two interceptions against Wake. The secondary was burned for 404 yards. Maybe against Wake. It can’t happen in road games against teams with a chance to finish in the top half of the ACC. UNC’s rushing defense, on the other hand, allowed 52 yards on 22 carries last week. Marcus Jones, UNC’s defensive player of the week, recorded six tackles. Tidbits: North Carolina ran its full backs just five times against Wake Forest, a season low .... Since a 35-14 setback in Atlanta in 1991, the Tar Heels are 18-8 and the Yellow Jackets are 11-10 .... With a win against Tech, Mack Brown would pull within one game of a .500 record at UNC. His six-year log is 30-32-1. o DAY# ■ #AMB Al# "and COMPUTERS |g" 2400 Baud COMPAQ L CREATIVE Edutainment internal Presario 486S>X/25 *s£2£r TheCompiete PC> 14.400 Baud Internal iffil 01/IHATA ri oon **&i~*~****~ p ax Modem ■■■■■■ ; Hh| •Rapid Fax software for >l7 fonts *8 ppm > || ”| -v.42bis data compression ’postscript printer •4:.. ■ #13085 $17097 j •lntel 486SX/25 microprocessor j; : kl| *4 MB memory expandable to 20 MB A A A / A \ Tr or* Is heal I •14“ built-in color monitor with \/v I/I OLJ /Y OD ~" .■ > v M iraCKDail 1024 x 768 resolution \ J Y F IMKI - , /fly \ ........ . *2OO MB hard drive ... And this is the week to get it. Tech has yet to pro ve it can score against winning teams. Davis has little experience at QB and it has showed at times this season. Tech also lacks a go-to receiver. UNC defeated Georgia Tech and Vir ginia in back-to-back games last year at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels will show case their vast improvement if they can do it again—but this time on the road. UNC faces Virginia in Charlottesville Oct. 23. North Carolina 27, Georgia Tech 15.
