Keep it in Perspective
Despite losing so many starters to graduation and
injuries, UNC is trying to fulfill rising expectations
Expectations are never met.
They are always too high or too low,
but never directly on target.
In the case of the 1994 North Carolina
football team, it’s really hard to tell which
one.
Has this team underachieved?
Or has it overachieved?
Which way you see it depends upon
your perspective: fans and the media or
coaches.
The team has failed to put up the same
numbers it did last year and lost for the
second consecutive season in
Charlottesville. The Johnson &Johnson
tandem has failed to run for the yards it
did in 1993.
From the fans’ standpoint, the Tar
Heels have had a disappointing season.
The Peach Bowl, which people went
bonkers over in 1992, is no longer good
enough.
To the UNC coaching stafF, however,
this team is a smashing success. It is a
tribute to the program’s level of recruit
ing and coaching.
The squad lost 14 of 22 starters to
graduation. That was before the injuries.
Now mark off four more starters right
guard Scott Overbeck, split end Gray
Bovender, comerback Tim Smith and
most recently, offensive lineman Pat
Conneely.
The first three were lost for the year in

a one-week span in the preseason.
Conneely has played this season, but the
games he lost to injury, combined with
other various lesser injuries on the offen
sive line have created numerous prob
lems.
The graduation losses mixed in with
the injuries left North Carolina with two
very inexperienced positions —offensive
line and the secondary.
Both have been scrutinized this year,
but as the season comes to a close, the
players at those positions are improving
and the future looks bright.
The offensive line is controlling the
line of scrimmage almost as well as last
year’s edition.
The Maryland and N.C. State games
have been a case in point. Especially
against the Wolfpack, where redshirt
freshmen Jeff Saturday and Mike
Hobgood showed that they were ready
for action.
How far has Hobgood moved up the
depth chart? In August he wasn’t even
listed on it. The UNC media guide said
that he will be “competing for playing
time at right guard.” Playing time? He’s
starting these days.
The much-maligned secondary has
faced similar problems. Jimmy Hitchcock
was supposed to play free safety this year,
but Smith’s injury forced him to move
back to the comer.

Then Hitchcock went down, leaving
only one returning starter in the defen
sive backfield, strong safety Sean Boyd.
Omar Brown, Terry Billups and Reggie
Love got a chance to prove themselves a
year earlier than expected. This will ease
the transition next year.
Even though Hitchcock returned after
only missing two games, it has been a year
of learning for the young defensive backs.
After giving up the big play to opponents
most of the year, last week the Tar Heels
practically shut out N.C. State’s Eddie
Goines, one of the nation’s top deep
threats.
All this bodes well for the future. With
these young players getting a chance to
prove themselves this year, it should pro
vide UNC with unbelievable depth in the
1995 campaign.
But it is still 1994 and some expecta
tions are still unfulfilled. When trying to
decide whether North Carolina has over
or under achieved, just keep it in perspec
tive.
Random Thoughts
Duke’s undefeated run was kind of fun
while it lasted. It was like cheering on a
high school team.... This goal post tear
ing down epidemic is just plain stupid.
But you have to give credit to the athletic
department for installing new fan-resis
tant, bend-but-don’t-break goal posts.
