10 Wednesday, February 8,1995 Anthony Reid for CAA President For too long Carolina Athletic Association has been seen as a separate entity from the rest of the student body. Too much ofyour student fees are used by the CAA for you to be uninformed of its activities. As your CAA President I will bring CAA to the students and enrich the quality of services which CAA provides. I think CAA should better the services currently offered to students. I will refer to my plans for accomplishing this as the “Tar Heel Ticket.” The “Tar Heel Ticket” will provide many ways for students to benefit from and become in volved with Carolina athletics. ■ Allow students to use their UNC ONE Card for purchases at concession stands during athletic events. ■ Provide a biweekly calendar of athletic events in residence halls and in the Student Union. ■ Expand and update the Carolina Sports Out look (a magazine the CAA publishes annually). ■ Establish a consistent ticket distribution policy in the event of inclement weather (Dean Dome campouts). ■ Increase athlete-student interaction by spon soring an annual mixer/party. ■ Develop a community service project where athletes and students would volunteer together. ■ Create anew program called “Tar Heel Sports Fantasies.” This program will allow students to fulfill the dream of getting involved with Carolina sports firsthand. The winners can only be selected at an Olympic sports game which will help increase attendance at Olympic games. ■ Each semester sponsor CAA Awareness Week in which we will inform the campus of our semester goals and respond to suggestions and feedback about any of our programs. These elements comprise the “Tar Heel Ticket,” and would all be fresh ideas implemented by CAA. These goals are achievable and innovative ways by which CAA can improve relations with the student body. In addition to the “Tar Heel Ticket” I will improve several activities currently sponsored by CAA. Homecoming is one of our most exciting times of the year. Publicity of all our events will be one of our biggest goals. ITiis year I would also like to add a Homecoming Concert that will feature hip hop and alternative musical acts as a kickoff for Michael Holder for RHA President For on-campus residents, living in a residence hall is a great way to start off their college years. Although retention on campus is al ways a problem, I believe that something should be done to keep upperclassmen on campus. The purpose of living on campus is to make their lives much more enjoyable. I expect all areas and RHA to make the residents’ lives as enjoyable as possible. With RHA and area governments, liv ing on campus would be much more enjoy able and would allow on-campus students to have a great learning experience. Some of the ways I wish to improve the residents’ lives on campus are included in the following ... Programming This is one of the ways in which area governments can increase participation in RHA. I plan on having a campuswide pro gramming workshop one weekend in Sep tember and another in January where all area government members are required to attend. This programming workshop will be held with the area governments in mind. Being a former governor I know how im portant programming in the residence hall is. That is one reason why I will expand the duties of the Social Programming EA to include Programming EA. They will not only be in charge of social programming but programming in general. They will be responsible for being an accessible resource for each and every area in regards to pro gramming Each semester students contribute to RHA through their room rent fee. One of the major responsibilities of RHA is to provide for the students’ enjoyment of resi dence life through programming in the residence halls. I encourage all areas to spend all the Graduate and Professional Student Federation Candidate Platform Steve Hoffinann for GPSF President My name is Steve Hoffmann and I am running for the office of Graduate and Professional Student Federa tion president. Currently, I am the vice president of external affairs for GPSF. I have been a GPSF senator for the Depart ment of Pathology since 1991 and have served as District 9 representative of Stu dent Congress for the past two years. I have always been an outspoken advo cate for graduate and professional student’s needs and issues. lam well informed of the many issues that affect grad students and how to communicate and cooperate with the administration to accomplish our goals. I sit on several University committees (Buildings & Grounds, Student Chancellor’s Advisory, Chancellor’s CORE) that enable me to communicate the graduate voice to the campus as well as receive important information to relay to Carolina Athletic Association Candidate Platforms Rampage ’95. To make this event successful and to bring two well-known music groups to campus we will seek co sponsorship with another or ganization. The parade and Pep Rally on Franklin Street are poorly attended by stu dents. If we can improve the caliber of activities and rides on the street with special in- terest shown toward our students we can hopefully turn attendance around at these events. In addition I hope that we can bring a notable alumnus back to campus to be a Keynote Speaker for the Pep Rally. I would also like to have a forum this spring as well perform a survey on “What do you think is wrong with Homecoming?” If we can improve the events offered in any way we will. I also want to maintain the success of events like Tar Heel Tip-Off and the Slam Dunk Contest. To make any of this a success we will need the input of the campus. To improve attendance at Olympic sports I want to establish the Tar Heel Sports Fantasy Program. At the initial stages of the program (this spring) we will allow students to write in various dreams they have of becoming involved in Carolina athletics. From this step we will get approval from the coaches and athletes for all the ideas that they are able to perform. Then in fall at targeted Olympic sports games stu dents would be given a ticket stub and during the intermission of the game we will call the winning number over the loudspeaker. The winning student would then be allowed to select from the various “Tar Heel Sports Fantasies.” This program hope fully will be a way for students to get involved with our athletic teams as well as increase attendance at Olympic sports. I think that Carolina Athletic Association is an organization that should be extremely active in our campus community. I think that a leader with the right direction can steer any organization into a better direction. My leadership accomplishments and experience in CAA, and experience in a variety campus organizations make me an excellent candi date for CAA president. Residence Hall Association Candidate Platforms money that resi dents have given to their areas and to area governments. If governments are not able to spend all their moneys they should be re sponsible for their actions and should report this to the residents. Recognition Without the recognition of the Resi dence Hall Association, students will be unable to see what RHA is doing. I wish to expand the visibility of RHA on this campus. One way I intend on doing this is participating in many of the area’s activities and showing how these areas are directly involved with RHA. I also want to encourage incoming stu dents to participate in their area events as well as RHA and campuswide events. Another way recognition can be in creased is by holding forums on a campuswide level in which RHA shows how involved they can be with area gov ernments. Another way I would like to improve on recognition is being able to get our name out within the state, regional and national level. Currently our school is actively involved with the state, regional and national RHA organizations. I have been working with the state and regional organizations since November as the Regional Communications Coordina tor. I plan on continuing to keep the com munication lines up between the UNC RHA and the other RHA organizations through this position. I also fully support the RHA's bid for a state conference, which will be held at the UNC in February of 1996. jEfjloj the graduate student body. In addition, I also serve on the Legislative Con cerns Committee for the National Association of Graduate and Pro fessional Students, which allows me to gather information concerning federal law and issues such as tax-exemption and health care reform. My platform consists of three broad areas, health insurance, funding levels and infrastructure. The health insurance issue is one that is constantly the largest concern for graduate students. Many students do not receive stipend levels that enable us to even purchase the University’s low-cost plan. Several students have spouses and CANDIDATE PLATFORMS Over the past year, UNC athletics have contin ued to excel and attract attention. Accord ingly, the Carolina Athletic Association has emerged as the organization capable of representing students’ interests in such affairs. Future success of CAA, however, requires both stability and growth; essential experience must be meshed with ingenu ity. I hope to foster this vital development by serving as CAA President. In developing this platform, I concentrated on students’ concerns. CAA must therefore dedicate its resources to serving the student community. Efforts must consistently reflect general opinion. All proposals focus on effectively meeting stu dent needs. Feasible propositions address both past successes and shortcomings. I. EXPERIENCE Successful leadership of CAA requires both con crete participation and intangible comprehension of students’ interests. By serving as a CAA Cabinet member and treasurer, I possess this extensive range of knowledge regarding athletic affairs. Such offices allow for critical involvement in C AA’s entire scope of activities. Additionally, two years of camping out for basketball tickets provides a definitive grasp of students’ interests. The following experience dem onstrates both competence and commitment: ■ CAA Treasurer (1994-1995) ■ CAA Cabinet (1994-1995) ■ Daily Tar Heel Publishing Corporation Board of Directors (1994-1995) ■ Honors Program Student Advisory Board (1992-1995) ■ Co-Chairman of the Honors Host Program (1992-1994) ■ Carolina Contact (1992) ■ Intramural Basketball and Softball (1992-1995) n. CAA STUDENT PARTICIPATION CAA must remain dedicated to student needs by taking a more active role in communication and interaction. The following proposals demonstrate my desire to inform the student population about CAA activities: ■ Publicize all CAA meetings and encourage student attendance. ■ Improve telephone hotline by including more The bid team will be presenting the bid to NCARH (the state organization) this year at a conference on February 9-11 at Wake Forest University. If the UNC RHA gets this bid it will also increase our recognition within the state and region. Executive Positions RAs being involved with the RHA has been a hot topic for members of RHA. RHA decided that RAs could not be in volved within RHA. I fully support this decision made by the RHA. I would encourage area govern ments to keep RAs involved with area governments. Some RAs have been previously in volved with RHA in the past and know what an area government does for the residents. I would not discourage RAs from being involved on the area level, but only as liaison. They would enhance the productivity of area governments because they have a one-on-one relationship with residents and may be able to voice the concerns of the students much better. On The RHA Governing Board I would like to make two new positions which would be members at large. These two positions would have to come from two separate regions of campus and would be responsible for communications between the residents and RHA. I believe that if they came from two separate areas, more of the residents con cerns could be voiced to RHA. The Residence Hall Association should serve the residents of campus and should be responsible for what goes on in area governments and within RHA. I believe that through the increased pro gramming, RHA can serve the residents much better. Like our name says, we are for the residents of on-campus housing. children which only complicates the issue. To pay for health care, many seek a part time job . This takes people away from then work, and adds stress and a longer time to matriculation. I will continue to work closely with the Graduate School and the Faculty Council to lobby the General Administration for guaranteed health insurance for at least those graduate and professional TA/RA/ GA(s) that are functioning at or near the level of professors. The GPSF acts as a liaison and rich source of anecdotal infor mation between graduate students and all lobby efforts. The State must be “re-educated” to the teaching research and service provided by this under-supported group. In addition, UNC-CH continues to fall in national rankings. Outstanding students are being lost to other schools due to our lack of Wes Galbo for CAA President information. ■ Place suggestion boxes in Chase, Lenoir and Stu dent Union to solicit opin ion. ■ Distribute information and surveys regarding tick ets and popular events via e mail. ■ Post pertinent informa tion on electronic bulletin boards. ■ Establish more formal opportunities for stu dent involvement. HI. TICKETS Seating and distribution of tickets should be as effortless and equitable as possible. Successful poli cies will remain intact; however, CAA should re duce stringent constraints and promote simplicity. The following recommendations would aid in the accomplishment of such a goal: A. Football ■ Maintain general admission policy. ■ Maintain end zone block seating. B. Basketball ■ Establish fair and consistent distribution poli cies. ■ Continue Saturday morning distributions. ■ Work towards maintaining the option of in door camping, with ■ CAA subsidized concessions, in the event of inclement weather. ■ Protect campers by distributing line numbers early and frequently. ■ Maintain efforts towards increasing the avail ability of student NCAA/ACC tournament tickets. ■ Provided Coach Smith affords the privilege, allocate Super Fan blocks for conference games. ■ Sustain policy orientation speeches. ■ Publicize and distribute policies, updates, and block applications. IV. HOMECOMING Homecoming (Rampage) events should offer numerous, diverse attractions for the entire UNC community. Correspondingly, students’ desires should con Jessica Godwin for RHA President The residence hall experience creates a more intimate sense of community within the larger boundaries of the University. Whether it is through social programming, academic programming or enhancement item purchasing, we strive to make living on campus as enjoyable and educational as possible. From its concep tion) RHA has been administered by resi dents therefore representing the views and needs of the students residing on campus. The Residence Hall Association has ex isted to serve residents through strong stu dent leadership. I will continue this tradi tion of building a tight-knit community by implementing several new ideas. RHA Visibility In order to serve the needs of residents, residents must be aware of RHA and its purpose. I intend to increase the visibility of the Residence Hall Association on two levels campus and statewide. To ac complish this task on the campus of UNC, I plan to hold information meetings within each residence hall to explain the RHA organization. These information meetings will be held by current members of area and hall governments who will be able to answer questions concerning RHA. Also, the RHA newsletter has been found to be a very quick and efficient method to publi cize events sponsored by RHA. I feel it would be very beneficial to continue the newsletter due to its effectiveness in in forming residents of the happenings of RHA. On the statewide level, RHA antici pates hosting a conference for all universi ties affiliated with NCARH, the North Carolina Association of Residence Halls. If our bid is accepted to host the NCARH conference in February of 1996, the visibil ity of RHA at UNC will be increased throughout the state. I fully support our organization in hosting this conference because of the many benefits it will bring to UNC. Not only will it bring pride and support for guaranteed health insurance. Lobby pressures must continue with in creased cooperation from GPSF and the faculty to achieve this goal. The next agenda item is funding levels. The average salaries for graduate TAs is $6,656 and for RAs $8,337. This numbers rank last among the 12 “sister” schools we evaluate UNC against. Only 54 percent of graduate and professional students receive some form of supportive funding. Many of these students then have to pay tuition and fees as well as living expenses and debt from this money. Out-of-state students have higher tuition and the state-allotted tuition remission have been constant since 1984. As with health insurance, cooperative ef forts are under way with the faculty and administration to secure adequate funding and additional remissions, especially in the humanities. Professional schools should & visibility to UNC, but it will also pro vide an increase in RHA participation due to the numer ous new positions that will be available to residents. Housing and RHA Recently, an is- sue concerning the coalition of RHA and housing has been brought to RHA’s atten tion more specifically, the controversy of whether resident assistants should be allowed to hold a RHA position. The gov erning board’s decision reflected the cur rent standing of housing’s position on this issue, RA liaison only. I support this deci sion but would also like to extend the ties with housing through increased RA liai son participation. TTie link between RAs and RHA is important due to the direct relations both groups have with residents. I would like to create an RA Liaison executive assistant position on the executive board of RHA. The RA liaison will serve a beneficial role to RHA by bringing us possible concerns that residents have that RHA can address. These concerns can then be presented to the Housing Issues executive assistant who then meets with housing to discuss these issues. The Housing Issues EA has been effective this past year by providing a link who brings the concerns of residents to housing. With the new RA Liaison posi tion, resident views will be represented at a greater capacity. I hope to make this bond between housing and RHA much stronger to benefit the interests of campus residents. Programming I would like to collect ideas from all residents concerning their interests in pro grams. It is important to get ideas from campus residents in order to plan events that they would like to do. I plan to retrieve have options available to have partial dis missal ofloan debts for public service, such as AHEC in the School of Medicine or rural civil practices in the School of Law. Again, I will be involved with decision making committees and go to Raleigh to lobby the legislature for reforms. The final goal of my platform will be to continue building a strong infrastructure to support and promote the GPSF. The GPSF should take great responsibility to educate its constituents. With the help of OIT and graduate students in computer sciences, the GPSF will have an e-mail account that will be expanded to the Web server in place on the Internet. We will be able to update the listserve with current and helpfiil information on scholarships and fellowships, campus events, and other important issues relevant to graduate and professional students. We also get infor Saily Star Uppl tinue to increase in proportion to those of the town. CAA should also co-sponsor popular Rampage elements to ensure variety. The following events would bolster Homecoming spirit: ■ Continue the Homecoming Comedy Show and efforts to attract national talent. ■ Promote the Homecoming Step Show, with co-sponsorship from the Black Greek Council. ■ Improve Cross Cultural night by increasing the number of speakers and participation from external organizations. ■ Ensure collegiate representation during Franklin Street Extravaganza through band perfor mances. ■ Enhance the Homecoming Pep Rally/High light Film. ■ Maintain Homecoming Queen poll sites in the Pit, but also add convenient locations in Chase Hall. V. OLYMPIC SPORTS Given Carolina’s national athletic prominence, CAA should improve support for all Olympic sport events. Students should share the excitement and achievement of the numerous athletes dedicated to UNC. The following programs will not only in crease participation, but also bolster pride: ■ Expand “Blue Blitz” efforts. CAA will pro mote each Olympic sport’s most consequential game ■ Increase visibility for Olympic sports by con tinuing to sponsor “Chat With the Coach.” Stu dents will, thus, have informal access to successful and inspirational campus athletes. ■ Support half-time giveaways at Olympic sport events to generate attendance. VI. OTHER Exciting programs and facilities are vital to CAA. With this inspiration, I advance the following pro posals: ■ Sustain Tar Heel Tip-Off. ■ Continue “big-screen” showings of crucial games in either Carmichael Auditorium or the Smith Center. ■ Work towards establishing a satellite South Campus fitness center, in conjunction with the Student Recreation Center, to improve convenience and alleviate overcrowding. the interests of residents in two ways. Firstly, during RHA information meet ings, we can ask residents what interests they have in programming. Secondly, a campuswide survey will be conducted at the beginning of the school year to obtain the opinions of all residents. This survey will allow all residents the opportunity to share their ideas of RHA programming and concerns. Who says we can only have a Springfest? I would like to establish a program in the fall called Fallfest. The program will consist of events that campus residents have suggested through the com prehensive surveys and information meet ings we will enact. This program will pro vide residents a time to sit back, relax and socialize with friends! Also, I intend to make RHA Week an annual tradition.. This event involves a variety of programs on the area and campus-wide levels. RHA Week is designed to increase the residents’ awareness of the Residence Hall Associa tion. RHA Week activities include a range from cookouts in the Pit, speakers, diver sity programs, to community service projects. Campus residents will have the opportunity to become more aware ofRHA by seeing firsthand the programs and events RHA provides. RHA and You RHA is determined to serve all resi dents at its maximum capacity. I intend to fulfill this goal by providing you the most organized government possible. The reor ganization of RHA established by this year’s governing board has been very effec tive. With the addition of the RA liaison executive assistant, I feel RHA will have the potential to be a much more efficient orgamization in assessing the needs of campus residents. The Residence Hall Association is here to make your residence living as comfortable and enjoy able as pos sible. Remember, RHA is here for you, the resident! mation on national issues from NAGPS regarding congressional bills, etc. that will increase awareness. Also, it will give the “busy” student a chance to be heard and get information in addition to the exchange with the GPSF Senate. We all have been undergraduates at one time and as a vice president of the student body, I can provide input and cooperative leadership forthem. I hope to work closely with the new SBP and Student Congress to keep everyone well-informed of the cam pus community and its needs. Representa tion and accountability are crucial to lead ership. I have served graduate students well in the past and my track has shown me to be accountable to all student concerns. I hope to continue these ideals and reach the mentioned goals as GPSF president. I look forward to your support and cooperation in the year ahead.
