GJlfr Saily ®ar Mwl UNC Hopes to Shake Walioo Bhies Vs. Tech BY JONATHAN HART STAFF WRITER The North Carolina women’s basket ball team will attempt to recover from last week, when they dropped two out of three games and fell six spots in the AP top 25. The No. 11 Tar Heels (20-3, 7-3 in the ACC) travel to Atlanta tonight to play Georgia Tech (11-10,4-6) at 7:30 p.m. The Tar Heels have had some hard times lately. After opening the season with 18 straight victories, UNC fell to Duke, 74- 72. The team rebounded with a victory over Wake Forest but lost two games to Virginia BO-64 in Charlottesville, Va., last Monday and 88-78 at home Sunday. Sandwiched between those games was a 9247 crushing of Florida State. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, is beset by injuries. Juniorforward Kathy Dortch, the team’s top shot blocker last year, under went arthroscopic knee surgery Dec. 29 and has been redshirted. Senior center Demieta Keener, the team’s third-leading scorer, has been both ered by knee injuries all year. Keener reinjured her knee in practice last week and is probable for tonight’s game. Also listed as probable is sophomore forward Dawn Smith, who sprained her ankle. UNC beat Georgia Tech in their first meeting, Jan. 7. The Tar Heels spanked the Lady Jackets 74-62 in front of a crowd of 2,sloatCarmichaelAuditorium. Tonight’s game is at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, where the Jackets are 54 this season. Senior forward Charlotte Smith has performed well for the Tar Heels all year, but she has turned it up a notch in the last three games. The Shelby native paced UNC with 31 points and 14 rebounds in each UVa. game. Smith also led the team with 26 points and 14 boards against FSU. In the previous meeting with Georgia Tech, Smith and freshman Tracy Reid led UNC with 20 points apiece, and Smith added 14 rebounds. Junior Tonya Cooper grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the game. That glitch has become obvious recently in losses to Duke and Virginia (twice). Lack of consistency at the shooting guard (Sampson’s spot) and at center (Crawley’s position) were major factors in the losses. You can’t blame Charlotte Smith in the losses, because she certainly did her part. Against Duke, she grabbed nine boards and was UNC’s only inside force. Against UVa., Smith was incredible 3l points and 14 rebounds in each game. Not bad. You can’t blame Marion Jones, either. Her first priorities are to direct the offense and steal the ball. Shooting should not be a priority for Jones, but she had to try and create some kind of offense in all three losses. She ended up shooting 21 of 61. But you really can’t blame her for frying. For this team to win big games and advance far into the NCAA tournament, the play at the other three positions must improve. Stephanie Lawrence must find hershot(maybesheshouldn’thaveworked at the New York Knicks’ basketball camp this summer) and the rotation at the two guard and center positions must solidify. At shooting guard, UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell has experimented all year, using three players: freshman Tracy Reid, sopho more Lori Gear and junior Tonya Cooper. All are good at one aspect of the game; none are well-rounded. Reid is the scorer. When under control, she can drive by anybody. But that’s when she’s under control. Gear is the 3-point bomber. Cooper is the defender. Her‘D’earned her starts in re cent games, but she can’t score JUSTIN SCHEEF COMN'ATCKA the way Reid can. Sampson was all three of those players. At center, the situation is similar. Hatchell has tried 6-0 junior Tonya Jack son, 6-7 senior Gwendolyn Gillingham and 6-2 senior Came McKee. None is the fluid post player that the 6-5 Crawley was. Jackson is the scorer. Her little hook shot is usually effective, but her height makes her a liability against big players. Gillingham is the shot blocker. She can be intimidating, but her rebounding and scoring ability are limited. McKee is die tenacious rebounder. Her For the Record In Tuesday's article Track Qualifies 2 More in Dual Wrth Nebraska," the Nebraska men’s team was listed as No. 1 in the nation. Nebraska is ranked No. 1 now, but it was No. 2 at the time of the meet. North Carolina is ranked No. 3. Also, the UNC tracksters have qualified for the NCAA meet in 11 events provision ally and four events automatically. The DTH regrets the errors. | Word Processings | APPLICATIONS. SF-17VS. Vote in Campus Elections' Wednesday, February 8,1995 fervor picks up her teammates, but she is not usually an option offensively. The solution? There is no easy one. But if Hatchell can find the right rotation for those six players, and if Lawrence can shoot like she did her first three years, UNC could repeat as national champions. ItaMlen Ibeaflrts Sunday was a great day for women’s basketball. I realized the crowd would be huge when I was hassled by a parking attendant before the game. That attitude is usually reserved for men’s games and foot ball games.... I really wish the UNC men’s basketball team would make its games more interesting. Yawn.... Duke is 0-9. Comment? Suggestion?
