Satlg ®ar KM SPORTS BRIEFS UNC Baseball Opens Year Today in Florida Tourney The UNC baseball team begins its 1995 season today at the sixth annual Olive Garden Collegiate Baseball Gassic in Kissimmee, Fla. The Tar Heels open the four-team round robin tournament in doubleheader action beginning at 1 p.m. against Georgia. UNC then takes on seventh-ranked Miami at 4:30. Geoigia plays tournament-host Cen tral Florida at 8 p.m. in the nightcap. UNC jump starts play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Central Florida, followed by Central Florida-Miami at 4 p.m. and Mi ami-Georgia at 8 p.m. In Sunday’s final round, teams will be seeded by their tournament records. The consolation game begins at 12:30 p.m. followed by the title game at 4 p.m. CAA to Distribute Duke Tickets This Weekend Senior distribution for the Duke-UNC basketball game will be held tonight at 6 p.m. All seniors graduating by December and graduate students in the last semester of their program are eligible for senior tickets. The CAA will hand out vouchers from 6 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Saturday morn ing. Tickets will be distributed beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. Underclassmen may begin camping out for tickets tonight at 6 p.m. at which time the CAA will distribute numbers. Under classmen tickets will be distributed Sunday at 8 a.m. Line checks will be conducted at the top of any hour from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday and unlimited checks are possible from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday. Atlantic 10 Opens Door For VPI, Dayton, La Salle The Atlantic 10 will have 12 schools next season, five of them first-year mem bers after Virginia Tech, Dayton and La Salle joined the conference Thursday. The three newcomers join fellow rook ies Xavier and Fordham in a league that has gone from a questionable future to a solid basketball conference that will reach a number of major television markets. West Virginia and Rutgers will leave the current nine-team league after this sea son to join the Big East. When that move was announced last year, many thought Massachusetts and Temple would leave. SCHMITT STAFF WRITER The UNC women’s basketball team will try to improve its record over the last three weeks to above .500 in a home matchup against George Mason Saturday at 1 p.m. TTte game is the first meeting between the Tar Heels (21-3 overall) and the Patri ots (5-13). North Carolina is coming off of an 84- 62 win over Georgia Tech on Wednesday after dropping three of its last six games, including two to Virginia. Sophomore guard Marion Jones led the effort against the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while freshman reserve guard Tracy Reid threw in 6of 11 field goals to score 16. State In Swim Meet; Women Win STAFF REPORT RALEIGH One day after the UNC women’s swimming and diving team toppled N.C. State, the Wolfpack men turned the tables on the Tar Heel men, scoring a 130-113 win Thursday night in the regular season finale for both teams. The N.C. State men led UNC 117-109 heading into the meet’s final event. The Pack captured first and third places in the 400-yard freestyle relay to secure the win. The Wolfpack quartet of Chucky Cox, Brandon Walts, J.J. Marus and Carlos Santander took first in the 400 relay, less than three seconds ahead of UNC’s team of Jon Thorpe, Matt Branum, Ed Abele and Eric Fehr. UNC’steamofJayGriffin.JasonJames, Peter Cloutier and Damien Leonardi fin MaxweD Appeals Fine, Suspension For Punching Fan THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON —While admitting he was wrong to attack a fan, Houston guard Vernon Maxwell said Thursday he will appeal his 10-game suspension ands2o,ooo fine because the NBA did not fully investi gate the incident. In a statement read by his attorney, Maxwell said that the NBA did not know how abusive the fan became and that the league should improve its security atgames. “I hope my case and my appeal will draw enough public attention to this prob lem so something is done about it,” Max well said. "Some reasonable guideline for appropriate fan conduct needs to be adopted. It shouldn’t be open season on the players.” Maxwell was ejected from Monday night’s game at Portland after he stalked into the stands to confront Steve George, the fan Maxwell said had been shouting racial slurs and insulting his family.
