Qtyr Sail}} ®ar liepl Harpring Stepping It Up for Forrest-less Tech BY JAMES D. WHITFIELD SENIOR WRITER When James Forrest broke his hand Jan. 28 in an automobile accident, Geor gia Tech’s chances for finishing in the upper division of the ACC standings looked bleak. But sometimes in sports, someone steps forward to fill a superstar’s shoes. Since Forrest’s injury, someone has stepped into the spotlight. That someone is freshman Matt Harpring. After the injury, Techheadcoach Bobby Cremins made Harpring an integral part of the Yellow Jacket offense. And lo and behold, the Rambling Wreck has gone on a three-game winning streak, including a 100-91 win last Saturday over No. 8 Maryland. That’s right, the same Maryland team that ousted No. lUNC Tuesday night. Now, the Tar Heels get a firsthand look at Harpring and the Yellow Jackets this Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Alexander Memo rial Coliseum. The game will be televised nationally on ABC. Harpring nailed a career high 28 points against the Terps and also got his hands on 12 rebounds. He recorded an 8-for-10 day from the field which included a 4-of-4 mark from the 3-point line. “That was one of the finest performances I’ve seen a freshman have in an ACC game, ” said Cremins. “I’ve been watching a lot of games in this league, and that was one of the best individual performances I’ve seen by a freshman, and I hope he can play like that all the time.” Going into Thursday’s game at Duke, he had scored 12.2 points per game. But the Dunwoody, Ga., native does a lot more than just shoot the rock. Calvin and Hobbes I DIPHT DO \X! I HEVER BESIDES, A TUE DEFEUDMT PETITIONS THREW THM.' That was Smith’s fifth personal foul and opened the gate for the Jackets’ win. “Every time (Smith) got the ball down low, he would make that spin toward the middle and have an easy shot,” said Harpring, who scored 14 points in a Jan. 12 loss to UNC in Chapel Hill. “They threw it in to him, and I figured he was going to spin that way again. I knew he had fourfouls, so I got there in the paint, and he spun right into me, and I drew the charge. ” Bolstered by plays like that and growing support from opposing coaches, Harpring may be the frontrunner for ACC Rookie of the Year. “I thought Matt Harpring had a great game,” Maryland coach Gary Williams said after his team’s loss in Atlanta. “He made some big shots, especially for a fresh man. He’s really smart. He gets open. He doesn’t try to do anything he can’t do, and that’s the sign of a very good player. He just takes advantage of what he can do.” Harpring’s success may be a huge sur prise to ACC followers along Tobacco Road, but Cremins has known all along what the 6-foot-7 forward can do. Cremins’ son Bobby HI lined up with Harpring on the Georgia AAA state cham pion Marist High School team. “There’s an NCAA rule where a father is allowed to go see his son play,” Cremins said. “Matt played at Marist, and I saw him play a lot because my son is on the team. At the time, I told Matt I would take him, but he’d probably be the fifth guard. “Then things changed.” That’s right, just like things changed drastically when Forrest went down. And not too many people in Atlanta have com plained about it. 6 Engine type 7 Box at the opera 8 German river 9 Purchase incentive 10 Old saying 11 Brownish purple 12 Religious image 13 Study 21 Conductor Georg 22 City in Germany 25 Gnatlike fly 26 —a million 27 Tears apart 28 English composer 29 Eccentric 30 Ms. Chase 31 Distribute 32 Clerical employee 33 One who writes a check 35 Ward (off) 36 Movie canine 38 Fry quickly 1 [2 [3 [4 MBs [6 p [8 ■■? ho 111 112 113 14 An |B - " 20 pi p 2 ■■ ■■23 ■■■■24 25 26 27 28 34 ■■3s ■■36 37 136 p 9 40 ■■4 l ■■42 43 ■■44 ■■4s iJM*® ■■■47 ■■■^■■^h 49 po 51 |52 53 54 55 56 ■■s7~ ~ ■■sß 59 Hm 'lm 62 ’■■63 HH | For Rent | GrearV>cation cujrcpular ikanklin St., I 19m5i43| 1 SPACES A VAILABLmFOR \ SPRING S FALi Np Rent Incrrasos atov with us & never HOUSES CLOSE TO CAMPUS 3 bedroom. 2 full bath Fully renovated washer/dryer includ ed High efficiency heat ($1100) 3 bedroom. 11/2 bath: fenced in yard Washer/Dryer in cluded In good condition ($1000) Pets are ok Available in February and March, but will con sider a May to May lease Call porcupine prop erties 4008328 DTH CLASSIFIEDS - THE BEST WAY TO GET ACROSS TOWN & CAMPUS! The Cameron Crazies stormed the court to celebrate the win. The Blue Devils (11-11, 1-9 in the ACC) were on the verge of winning twice in the last two weeks, falling to No. 1 North Carolina and No. 8 Mary land by two points in each game. Both times, struggling Duke, last year’s NCAA runner-up, just couldn’t get a clutch play in the final moments with out coach Mike Krzyzewski on the bench. This time around the Blue Devils got key baskets by freshmen Trajan Langdon and Ricky Price in a span of 20 seconds as Duke cooled off the ACC’s hottest team. The Yellow Jackets (15-7,6-4) had won three straight conference games by an average of 17.3 points without leading scorer and rebounder James Forrest, who is sidelined with a broken hand. Cherokee Parks led Duke, which avoided losing in Cameron Indoor Sta dium for a fifth straight time, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. © 1995 Tribune Media Services, Inc. Time: 1:30 p.m. Location: Alexander Memorial Coliseum, Atlanta Radio: WCHL 1360 AM, WTRG 100.7 FM Television: ABC-TV (WTVD-11) Series Record: UNC leads 40-11. Keys for UNC: The Tar Heels must find Rasheed Wallace on the blocks. ’Ra’ could be a gold mine for UNC against Eddie Elisma inside. If Wallace gets shut down, UNC must look for Donald Williams or Jeff Mclnnis to penetrate and shoot medium-range jumpers or hit the 3. Keys for Georgia Tech: The Jackets must put a 77-70 loss to Duke Thursday behind them and play with lively feet. This game could get ugly if Tech doesn't play with fire. And of course, it always helps to hit treys against the Tar Heels. Ter Heel Bench: Reserve center Serge Zwikker could play a big role off the bench. The 7-foot-2 Dutchman will tower above the undermanned Jacket front line. Forward Pearce Landry played an active game against the Terrapins. Yellow Jacket Bench: C.J. Williams played 15 minutes of the second half against Maryland because of Mike Maddox's foul trouble. James Forrest's injury hurt an already shallow bench. Prediction: UNC 81, Georgia Tech 71.
