But last weekend at Fetzer Gym, the phrase took on a different meaning as the Caro lina Team Handball Club hosted the Caro lina Blue Cup Tournament. The Carolina Blue Cup Tournament is ranked by the United States Team Hand ball Federation as the third-best tourna ment in the nation, according to CTHC’s faculty advisor John Silva. The tourna ment field consisted of 10 teams, winding two from UNC. The CTHC team finished sixth this weekend, while Carolina Blue, a team con sisting of UNC alumni, finished eighth. Garden City capped their third straight Carolina Blue Cup with a 20-14 victory over Winnipeg Select. The Swim and Sport Club of New Jersey beat the New York City Team Handball Club 17-13 for the bronze medal. “I thought we played really well,” said Silva, a professor in the Department of BASEBALL FROM PAGE 12 newcomers can pick up some of the offen sive slack at the plate. “I think my defense will be there; I just need to pickup the offense a little,” Boone said. “We lost a lot of pop from last year in Cookie (Massey), (Chris) Madonna, and Manny (DaSilva.) “I think everybody on the team needs to step it up a little bit.” BASEBALL UHCS,ASU4 ABU 020 020 000 - ♦ 7 2 ' UNC ooi 030 10x - 5 9 2' teaia (8). They opened up a lead near the end and we weren’t able to close it.” CTHC beat West Point Gold 19-14 in the first game of the preliminary round. It dropped the second game to Garden City 21-16, but beat Ohio State 23-9. “The Ohio State game was a little bit of a mismatch," Silva said. He said the team used the game to practice little-used offen sive setups. CTHC played SSC in the final game of Saturday’s action. The two teams went back and forth the entire way, with SSC scoring the go-ahead goal on a breakaway with 40 seconds left. CTHC got the ball back, but left-winger Michael Blum’s shot with eight seconds on the clock hit the post, giving SSC a 23-22 victory. “It was a great game,” said Blum, a history major from Wiesbaden, Germany. “It came down to the last shot at the end, and I didn’t make it.” CTHC played West Point Black in the fifth-place game Sunday. Both CTHC and West Point finished 2-2 in pool play. West Point jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but UNC cut it to 10-7 at halftime. With more than three minutes left, West Point held a 19-15 lead. CTHC came back with three goals to cut the deficit to 19-18, but Silva missed a last-second shot, saddling CTHC with its second straight one-goal loss. “One thing about this team is that they are veiy talented,” Silva said. “They play together pretty well and there is no quit in them. “The Army coach said we out-hustled them. That’s pretty rare, because Army takes pride in their hustle.” Left back Matt Johnson was the leading scorer for CTHC throughout the tourna ment with nine goals against West Point Black and 11 goals against SSC. CTHC is looking for more players to join the squad. Silva said students, faculty, and staff members are all eligible, espe cially those who played “throwing sports” such as baseball and basketball.
