Also on Thursday, freshman Chuckie Parquet decided to switch from quarter back to defensive back. JC liaM BET Finley Follies: Softball Home Woes Continue BYSHERRYHONEYCUTT STAFF WRITER Head softball coach Donna Papa is breathing a small sigh of relief as her team hits the road for UNC-Charlotte today. Despite the traditional preference in ath letics for home games, the UNC softball team just can’t seem to shake its recent bad luck at Finley Field. The Tar Heels lost two ACC games on home territory to Georgia Tech Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets shut them out 8-0 in the first game and managed to hold onto a one-run lead to win the second game 3-2. The losses were UNC’s fourth straight at Finley Field. “We have not played well at home, and that’s very unusual in comparison to past teams,” Papa said. “Right now we’re play ing better on the road. I don’t know what it is.” In game one, Georgia Tech (7-7) scored four runs in both the fourth and the sixth innings Junior pitcher Laura Brown got the win for the Yellow Jackets, while freshman left-hander Brandy Arthur threw for the Tar Heels (17-16). “The first game, we made mistakes that hurt us. Our defense was not good,” Papa said. Still, UNC managed seven hits in that game, compared to just two in the second. “In the second game we got two hits. You don’t win a game getting two hits. And I think that’s the first time we’ve been in that situation, where we didn’t hit the ball,” Papa said. Georgia Tech doubled the Tar Heels’ total hits for the day, getting 18 compared to UNC’s nine. The second game looked promising for UNC when the Tar Heels jumped to an SOFTBALL Georgia Tech 8, UNCO H~6.T#ch 100 404 - ~T“"iT3 UNC J 222 000 - Q 7 1 _ W-Btovm. But in the third inning, Georgia Tech’s Laura Williams, the smallest player on the Yellow Jacket roster and possessor of the nickname “half-pint,” stepped up to the plate and drove a deep line-drive over UN C rightfielder Arthur. The result was an in side-the-park home run and another run batted in. “Laura was ACC Rookie of the Year last year,” said Regina Tomaselli, Tech head coach. “She’s really deceptive be cause she is the smallest on our team. I was quite surprised she was able to get a home run because the fence is so close here, but she’s got blinding speed.” The Yellow Jackets got another ran in the fifth inning to make the score 3-2, and from there UNC just couldn’t get another hit to even things up. Freshman Erin Ryan chalked up the win, and UNC junior Angie Gill got the loss. Tomaselli was happy with her team’s performance. “I’m ecstatic,” she said. “We really haven’t been playing well, but today we brought our whole package. We brought key hitting, tight defense, and good pitch ing. “It’s nice to come up here against a good Carolina team and against a very good coaching staff and take two.” Romano’s Pizza Kitchen 9i**a 9Jade ‘From Scratch sick parses gore ‘Loser Special Large 1-Topping Pizza $7.25 WE NOW TAKE CREDIT CARDS! A roommate of Lewis was quick to deny the report. The Boston Globe re portedTuesdaythatDerrickLewis, a friend and college teammate of Bias, used co caine with Reggie Lewis and Bias in 1985. Reggie Lewis died three months after collapsing in a game. The cause of death was listed as an irregular heartbeat caused by the common-cold virus. The Wall Street Journal said cocaine wasn’t adequately investigated as a cause of Lewis’ collapse.
