During the evaluation period CALEA will examine files and will tour police fa cilities while questioning employees. CALEA officials will also ride with offic ers during shifts and ask the officers how they would respond to potential situations. “We are absolutely ready for our on-site now, and I am confident that we are going to do well,” Graves said. During CALE A’s assessment, the orga June 1993, Adcock came to UNC in the fall term of 1993. He was pursuing a degree in psychology and was expected to gradu ate in December. He was not enrolled in UNC’s summer term. Adcock was a 1991 graduate of Oak Ridge Academy. He graduated as the vale dictorian and the highest ranking cadet in the Academy. We all remem ber him as a vibrant, active young man.” The funeral was held 11 a.m. Wednes day at Hester Baptist Church in Oxford. According to Dr. Thomas G. Folk, a cardiology fellow at UNC Memorial Hos pital, congestive heart failure means the heart is not pumping as strongly as it should be. In younger adults, the common causes are viral illnesses or congenital heart dis ease. Vaida Thompson, director of social psy chology for the University, said Martz was completing his dissertation in the Depart ment of Psychology this summer, the cul mination of a four-year process toward completing his doctorate, and would have defended it this fall. Caryl Rusbult, a professor in the De partment of Psychology and colleague of Martz’s, said he was a talented researcher who would be missed. “He was a talented young scientist who had tremendous promise for advancement in the field. We (the faculty and students in the Psychology department) are trying to finish his dissertation so he will be Dr. John Martz,” Rusbult said. 3$ Copies July I*-31 st ! ( Blue Cheese, Ranch, French, 1,0000 Island) - Coupons do not apply! .o lailg (Jar Hppl Rusbult said Martz was not only a dedi cated scientist but also a committed sup porter of his wife, Christine Gnswold- Martz, and three sons, Andrew, Matthew and Michael. “He was committed more than any thing to having a full, rich home life,” she said. “He and his wife shared equally in the raising of their children.” Martz worked part-time during the last two years as a computer programmer for the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center through the Department of Biosta tistics. Jeff Abolafia, the director of statistics at the center, said Martz was an excellent programmer who was “a huge asset to the organization. “John was really interested in program ming, a very big help to everyone,” he said. “But he was more dedicated to his family than anything else.” Martz was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, earning both a B.S. and B.A. in 1988. He enrolled in UNC in the fall of 1988 and received his master’s degree in De cember 1990. “I regret not having the opportunity to see John grow and develop as a young professor,” Rusbult said. “I will miss him enormously as a student, a colleague and a friend.” The burial will be held in his home state of Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be held later this summer in Chapel Hill Griswold-Martz was in Pennsylvania and was unavailable for comment.
