p.m. cutoff time students enjoyed during
previous semesters.
The new policy began Aug. 14, Randy
Young of the DTP said Thursday. Young
also said notices were posted on Aug. 11,
alerting students and faculty to the changes.
The new parking regulations, which will
be up for review in the spring of 1996, are
an effort by the DTP to ensure that the
spaces are used for short-term parking only.
“This is an issue of equity, ” Y oung said,
not a punitive measure. Young said the
DTP was trying to enforce proper and
intended usage of the metered spaces.
Young also said this was not an effort to
generate extra revenue, and the DTP was
not looking at a significant increase in staff
to enforce the measure.
“I wish there was more parking,” said

Becki Gales, a student in Public Health.
Gales said she did not mind paying to
park in the evening, but was concerned
with the time limit on the meters outside
the Student Union building. She said she
thought it would encourage people to park
further away from the building for evening
events and cause people to walk in the dark
across campus to get to their cars, a prac
tice that freshman orientation specifically
discourages, Gales added.
Parking meters along West Drive, lo
cated near UNC Hospitals, were not af
fected and are still being monitored 24
hours a day. Spaces by Morehead Plan
etarium will continue to be monitored from
7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through
Friday, and from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. on
Sundays.
