The UNC volleyball team fought offjet
lag, fatigue and a feisty opponent by beat
ing Davidson 15-7,15-10,15-2 Monday.
The victory was the Tar Heels’ fifth in
seven matches this season, and their 5-2
record looks impressive when compared
with a 1-fi start last season.
The road-weary Tar Heels had just re
turned from a successful weekend tourna
ment at Miami of Ohio, where they won
two of three matches. Unfortunately, the
team couldn’t afford to rest against the
visiting Wildcats, who put up a strong fight
in the first two sets before getting pum
meled in the third.
Fourteen players contributed to a bal
anced UNC attack, led by freshmen Alicia
Alford (seven kills) and Lindsay Smith.
Smith tallied six kills andmadenoerrorsin
her nine attacks for a phenomenal .667
hitting percentage.
Only three players appeared in all three
games for the Tar Heels, and senior Kristin
Kruse was given the night offby her coach,
Joe Sagula.

defensive specialist Ashley Powers near
the end of the first game. Powers, who had
a personal-best 13 assists against Davidson
last season, provided UNC with 11 assists
and some much-needed pine time for Berg.
“I thought Ashley Powers did a great
job,” Sagula said. “I think her passers need
to do a better job for her in that position. It

The change in UNC’s attack led to
sloppyplayinthesecond stanza. Davidson
battled the Tar Heels step by step, and it
appeared as if the Wildcats would tie the
match at a game each.
With the score tied at nine and Davidson
pushing the Tar Heels to play their best,
UNC’s focus returned. Willey came off the
bench to deliver a kill that had Wildcat
playeis scrambling for safety, and its mo
mentum carried the Tar Heels through the
final twogames. They dominated the Wild
cats by winning 18 of the final 21 points.
Next weekend’s matches will offer the
Tar Heels little respite. Texas A&M, fresh
off a thrilling five-game victory over top
ranked Stanford, will visit Carmichael
Auditorium on Friday night, followed by
perennial powerhouse LSU on Saturday.

NBA Players Vote Today on Union Decertification

NEW YORK—WiII Michael Jordan’s
decertification effort carry the day, or will
his NBA colleagues back their union and a
new labor deal? The answer will come
today when players’ votes are counted.
But even that won’t necessarily be the
end of the NBA’s tangled labor dispute.
What happens next —and how longer the
lockout continues—will be determined by
who wins and by how much.
“We believe we’ve won,” said Jeffrey
Kessler, the lawyer representing Jordan,
Patrick Ewing and other players pushing
to disband the union.
“I think it will be a real revelation to
people,” said Simon Gourdine, the union’s
executive director.
But the losers are likely to challenge the
election results, erecting legal roadblocks
that could delay the opening of training
camp on Oct. 6 and drag on past Nov. 3,
when the season is scheduled to start.
Votes in the election to determine
whether the NBA players’ association will
continue to represent the players will be
counted publicly by National Labor Rela
tions Board officials this afternoon.

the turnout believed to benefit the union.
A vote for retaining the union was con
sidered a vote for a proposed labor agree
ment, one many players said they cast
reluctantly. If the union wins the election,
21 of the league’s 27 player representatives
must still formally ratify the new deal
Wednesday at a meeting in Chicago.
The margin of the win could determine
how the player reps vote. In June, they
killed a proposed agreement by tabling a
vote.
However, union leaders have said they
expect the deal to be ratified this time.
“Our expectation is if the union has a
clear victory in the voting next week, we
will ask the owners to ratify it and end the
lockout," NBA deputy commissioner Russ
Granik said.
After casting his vote last week, Jordan
didn’t seem inclined to continue his fight
for dissolving the union if the players vote
against it.
