Game and time: No. 9 Virginia at North Caro lina, Noon Site: Kenan Stadium Playing surface: Natural grass. TV/Radio: The game will be televised by Raycom- Jefferson Pilot (WRAL-5). The Tar Heel Sports Net work will provide radio coverage. The flagship stations are WCHL (1360 AM) and WTRG (100.7 FM). 1995 records: UNC 2-2; Virginia 5-1. Series: UNC leads 53-42-4 (35-10, UVa. in 1994). Personnel Update: North Carolina OG Jerness Gethers (leg), SS Wendel Camp (knee) are out. QB Tucker Perry (thumb) and SS Eric Thomas (groin) are questionable. Virginia —C Dave Gathman (knee), DB Joe Williams (ankle), T Doug Karczewski (apendectomy) are out. TE Bobby Neely (ankle) is questionable. Virginia offense: The balanced attack is led by junior TB Tiki Barber and senior QB Mike Groh. Barber averages over 109 yards per game and has racked up nine TDs in six games. Groh has passed for 1,174 yards and six TDs with only three interceptions. After losing star wideout Tyrone Davis to gradua tion, that left Patrickjefifers to handle the bulk of the load. Jeffers has responded with 18 catches for 298 yards in five games. Derick Byrd, Demetrius Allen and Germane Crowell also have chipped in to replace the Davis void. “Balanced attacks like this one are the ones that cause you the most problems,” UNC coach Mack Brown said. UNC offense: After tallying 637 yards of ofiense last week, everything would appear to be OK. That may be a costly illusion. Those yards were against Ohio, not a team ranked in the top 10 like Virginia. Going into last week’s game, the Tar Heels had yet to score consistently. Perhaps the 62 points will give them a confidence boost as they play the Cavs, but it still remains to be seen whether this offense can score consistendy in the red zone and hold on to the ball. Virginia UNC Cavaliers Tar Heels •^at^ (5-1) ' (2-2) Time: Noon Television: R-J, WRAL TV-5 Radio: WCHL-1360 AM, WTRG 100.7 FM Brown said Oscar Davenport will see time again as Mike Thomas's backup at QB. “We’d like to continue to use Oscar Davenport, because it took some pressure off of Mike. ... We plan to bring in Oscar for at least the third series and then play it by ear after that.” Virginia defense: Not as stingy as last year, but sufficient. After limiting opponents to 63.6 yards per game on the ground in 1994, the Cavaliers are giving up 115.3 in 1995. But against the pass, they are getting solid play from their defensive backs. The team has 10 interceptions, including three by S Percy Ellsworth and two each by comers Ronde Bar ber and Sean Crocker. The team has also broken up 32 passes. UVa. coach George Welsh said he would prefer that his DBs break up passes rather than risk interceptions. Total up the 10 picks and then add nine fumbles caused, and the Wahoos are plus-9 in the turnover category. This could spell trouble for UNC, which is minus-13. UNC defense: No. 1 in the nation. That rank is somewhat deceiving as it is in yards per game, and the UNC Schedule Syracuse 20, UNC 9 at Maryland 32, UNC 18 UNC 17, at Louisville 10 UNC 62, Ohio 0 Today, Virginia Oct. 14 at Georgia Tech Oct. 21 Wake Forest Nov. 4 at Clemson Nov. 11 Florida State Nov. 18 Duke Nov. 24 at N.C. But it is still an impressive stat, considering the youth of the front seven. To adjust for that youth, Brown switched Marcos Jones from end to tackle to get him closer to the quarterback and get younger guys on the outside. Brown is satisfied with the results through four games, in two of which Jones was completely healthy. “He hasn’t gotten the stats (one sack) he got on the outside last year, but Marcus having the inside has helped us stop the run on the inside.” With Jones seeing constant doubleteaming, Rick Terry, Greg Ellis, Russell Davis and the linebackers are piling up the sacks. “Marcus has had as much to do with the success of the other guys as much as the other guys themselves,” Brown said. After taking the week offlast week against option oriented Ohio, the UNC defensive backs will face their severest test since the Maryland debacle. Vir ginia burned the Tar Heels deep a couple of times last year. Today’s game will give Sean Boyd, Fuzzy Lee and Cos. a chance to prove themselves. Analysis /Prediction: After whipping Ohio last week, all seemed to be well with UNC. Everything was peachy keen. But then after the game, allegations of Tar Heel players dealing with agents came about. These have been put to rest as being false, but while Brown was interviewing players Sunday and Mon day, he could have been getting ready for Virginia. “There’s no question it was a distraction for me,” Brown said. “And it was a distraction for our play ers.” When hosting the No. 9 team in the nation, a team you haven’t beaten consistently in a long time, any distraction hurts. How much of a factor this week’s distraction will play in today’s game is unde terminable, but it is nonetheless a factor. Virginia’s propensity to cause turnovers and UNC’s propensity to turn over the ball could be the deciding factor. Virginia 24, UNC 20 COMPILED BY JUSTIN SCHEEF 9
