UNC Runners Favored at State Championship
BYERIN PARRISH
STAFF WRITER
Just like the Simon and Garfunkel song,
North Carolina men’s cross country cap
tain Brian Calloway is “Homeward
Bound.” Calloway heads back home to
Charlotte’s McAlpine Park Saturday, hop
ing to wrestle the state championship from
defending champion Brevard.
“We’re looking forward to coming into
the state meet as favorites with our North
Carolina contingent,” Calloway said.
North Carolina is not a national high
school powerhouse when it comes to cross
country, and the men who compete for
UNC were not heavily recruited by other
schools. So it is remarkable that head coach
Joan Nesbit’s 1995 squad consists almost
entirely of in-state products. The team has
turned it into a source of pride.
“It’s great to represent the University of
North Carolina with a group consisting
entirely of native Tar Heels,” said Dave
Mabe, the team’s No. 1 runner going into

season they are becoming a conference
power. Still, Nesbit is cautious.
“While the men are favorites, we can’t
be overconfident,” she said. “Brevard is
always strong, and they’ll be looking for
revenge after losing to us at Auburn two
weeks ago. And Duke has added some
good freshmen to their team this year.”
The Old North State connection ex
tends to the women’s team as well. Karen
Godlock, the defending state and ACC
champion and the top runner for the
women, knows McAlpine well she set
the state scholastic cross country record on
it when she competed for Polk County
High School. Godlock, coming off a sec
ond place finish last week, is poised to help
UNC defend its state championship.
Winston-Salem's Blake Phillips, Holly
Marquette from Rocky Mount and Jenni
fer Strange from Rural Hall round out the
other members of UNC’s travelling squad
who hail from North Carolina.
“We're looking forward to running on a
course that so many of us ran in high
said in a conference call. “I coached against
him in his last game in the ACC tourna
ment. He was a great coach, motivator and
one of the funniest guys you would ever
want to be around. He was unique. I think
they should have an ACC school in it every
year.”

school,” Godlock said.
The women, who have struggled early
this season, losing to Wake Forest and
placing sth at Auburn, hope the state cham
pionships will help them to come together
as a team with good performances. Wake
Forest will run only its B team in Charlotte,
leaving UNC as the favorite.
“The women can dominate this meet,
but it is going to take a great race from
everyone on the team,” Nesbit said. “We
need that sort of effort to carry into the
ACC meet.”
