6 Monday, October 16,1995 After Tough Selection Process, CAA Narrows Pool to BY RUTH BORLAND STAFF WRITER The Carolina Athletic Asso ciation has chosen seven women for the Homecoming court from a pool of 13 applicants based on points earned from the interview and the application. The women were nominated by campus orga nizations in which they partici pate. The court will appear in front of the student body Tuesday in the Pit, and students will vote for Homecoming queen from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Pit. Two-thirds of the decision will be based on student votes, and the other third will be based on the application and the interview. The seven women nominated for Homecoming queen are: Pamela Alston Alston is a biology major from Rocky Mount. She was nomi nated by the Black Student Move ment. She is president of Delta Sigma Theta service sorority and a mem ber ofthe chancellor’s committee on Greek Affairs. I’ve also had the oppor tunity to help others through Delta Sigma Theta and the Se nior Marshal program. Anna Coffin Coffin is a business adminis tration major from Charlotte. She was nominated by Kappa Delta sorority. She has been an active volun teer in student government cam paigns, the Child Advocacy Pro gram and the AmeriCorps literacy program. HOMECOMING 1995 ANNA COFFIN She also runs for the varsity cross country team and partici pates in the Fellowship of Chris tian Athletes. “I love cross country, ” she said. “It is also my last chance to play in a competitive college team, which I love to do.” She said FCA had been special to her because it had given her support, encouragement and in spiration. “It helps me keep my faith strong,’’shesaid. “In college, that can be hard to do.” Anne Hudson Hudson is a psychology major from Shelby. She was nominated by Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Medicine is one field that enables me to learn ev ery day and presents constant challenges.” Hudson said she spent sum mers in San Diego working with gang members and at-risk chil dren, in New York working for Sports Illustrated and in Europe studying Mozart. She will be inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society in November. Lina Patel Patel is a nutrition major from Chicago. She was nominated by Sangam. She is the co-chairwoman of Sangam’s service committee. “We’re trying to emphasize the idea that service isn’t just some lattg ®ar HppL J|Bk K | . Mr* ■ LINA PATEL thing we put on our resumes,” she said. “It’s important. We are trying to give back to the South Asian community and the Chapel Hill community through service. ” She said her job as a resident assistant also made her experi ence at UNC valuable. “Being an RA is possibly one of the best things I’ve ever done, ” she said. “I feel I have a lot more say about safety and well being of my residents.” Patel is also involved in BSPH, a nutrition club, and Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Jessica Rios Rios, a senior from Charlotte, is majoring in psychology. She was nominated by the Carolina Hispanic Association. Rios isthepresidentofCHispA.
