The scholarships are for $5,000 and go to students involved with CFA member football programs who intend to pursue a career in education. Bovender gave up football after suffer ing a second tom anterior cruciate liga ment injury in August of 1994. Bovender, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., was slated to be the starting split end last year. Duke Player Suspended DURHAM Duke coach Fred Gold smith has suspended linebacker Billy Granville, the team’s leading tackier last season, for the last four games this year. Goldsmith suspended Granville for breaking team rales. He would not elabo rate on what Granville, a junior from Lawrenceville, N. J., had done wrong, other than to say the suspension was not related to drugs. Granville, a starting inside linebacker, is second on die team in tackles this season. He’s one of Duke’s best ran stoppers and also calls the defensive signals. Duke’s defense, devastated by injuries, is ranked last in the nation statistically. Wake BY JONATHAN HART ASSISTANT SPORTSATURDAY EDITOR As far as anyone can tell, college foot ball in the state ofNorth Carolina began in 1888, when North Carolina and Wake Forest met at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. One hundred and seven years later, the two teams will meet Saturday at Kenan Stadium for the 92nd renewal of their ri valry. After a disappointing loss to Georgia Tech last Saturday, the Tar Heels (3-3 overall, 1-2 in the ACC) hope to rebound against Wake Forest on Homecoming. However, UNC head coach Mack Brown said that despite the Deacons’ poor overall record, he doesn’t expect the game to be a cake walk. “We know that we have a test, because Wake Forest plays better against us than anybody else they play all year,” Brown said. Maybe so, but Wake Forest (1-6, 04) hasn't played well this year against any body. The Deacons opened the season with a 24-22 loss to Division I-AA Appalachian State. The slide has yet to stop, with the lone bright spot being a 30-7 drubbing of Navy in Annapolis, Md. “Well, in certain areas I think we’re better than we have been,” Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell said. “Obviously, we still have a problem with the depth factor WEEKEND SPORTS SCHEDULE Friday, Oct. 20 Women's Golf at Lady Paladin Invitational, Greenville, S.C., TBA Women's Soccer vs. Florida State, Fetzer Field, 7 p.m. Men's Tennis at Volvo All-American Tournament, Austin. Obviously we haven’t arrived yet, and I think you can tell by noticing our scores and our record. In terms of the way we’ve been playing, we’ve been a lot more competi tive ... but our record has not indi cated that. There are spurts this year where I think we’ve been playing better than we have the previous few years, but obviously, we have a long way to go yet.” UNC, meanwhile, has had some straggles of its own. T en interceptions and 10 lost fumbles have combined for a -14 giveaway/takeaway rating. Caldwell said his defense is aware of the situation and has been preparing to take advantage of it. “I think there’s not a defense in the country that doesn’t work on takeaway drills, as far as stripping the ball and trying to force a little more pressure on the quar terback," Caldwell said. “That’s a daily part of our practice rou tine. It’s a must, because that’s how you make a difference in ball games, to get turnovers, to give your offense an opportu nity to drive the ball a shorter distance to the goal,” he said. UNC wasplagued with poor field position against Georgia Tech. Down 13-10 at halftime, the Tar Heels started their drives in the third quarter from their own 10, 19 and one-yard line. The result? UN Cfounditselfdown27-18atthe end of the third quarter. One way the Tar Heels have compen sated for poor field position has been to emphasize the passing game more. Octavus Barnes averages nearly 20 yards per catch and has racked up four straight games of over 100 yards receiving, a school record. “I think Octavus has played as well as any receiver we’ve ever had in the last two, three, four games,” Brown said. “He had a slow start early, but came into his own and he was open a number of times Saturday that we were unable to get the ball open to him.” Brown said that because the Tar Heels’ bigplayreceivers,Barnes andMarcus Wall, also return kicks, the team has had to shuffle receivers out of necessity. He said to look for contributions from players who haven’t seen much action, such as Na’ Brown, Darrin Ashford and L.C. Stevens. Peppers 1 102 E.
