2 November 18, 1995 In the Trenches Hinting 25 From Yanni’s chocolate milk comas to Skittle runs, Sport Saturday has endured changes each year. Thanks. Four years ago, The Daily Tar Heel editor had a crazy dream. Peter Wallsten conjured up this wild idea for a newspaper previewing every North Carolina football game. Hey, there’s only 53,000 people going to the game, why not? Since the first copy of the tabloid hit the stands on Sept. 12, 1992, changes have drastically given it a facelift. It’s changed printers twice and editors each year. Its subject, the UNC football team, has transformed from a mediocre ACC team to a team that has almost been guaranteed a bowl game if it finishes one game above .500. Asa staff, we’ve waded through the early-morning hours with ‘Zas (pizzas) and “chocolate milk comas” (don’t ask) with John “Yanni” Manuel. Thanks John for giving me a shot at all this. Now it’s “deep fried beef’ and Skittles. But most importantly, the content and design have changed with the times. In turn, that has made it popular with you, the reader. It’s so much easier to read than in 1 992. Graphics, layout and photography have dramatically increased the quality of the publication. Throughout all those changes, there has been two constants. Those mainstays are two people who are in the office on Sunday when the ideas get tossed around DTH Sport Schedule FRIDAY'S GRUDGE BOWL Technician (1 -0) at The Daily Tar Heel (0-1), 5 p.m. TODAY SOUTH Duke (3-7) at North Carolina (4-5), Noon Memphis (3-7) at East Carolina (7-3), Noon Maryland (6-4) at Florida St. (8-1), Noon Virginia Tech (8-2) at Virginia (8-3), Noon Vanderbilt (2-7) at Florida (9-0), 12:30 p.m. Tennessee (8-1) at Kentucky (4-6), 12:30 p.m. Clemson (7-3) at South Carolina (4-5-1), 12:30 p.m. Howard 11. They are there at 4 a.m. when Sport Saturday goes to bed, and we head off to Hector’s or Time-Out. Those two people are Managing Edi tor/Sports Editor/photographer/ Graphics (gasp for breath here) Editor and quite possibly cartoonistjustin Scheef and Production Manager Stacy Wynn. Scheef has done it all at the DTH. He deserves to be recognized for his contri butions to the regular paper. But when it comes to Sport Saturday, he’s a charter member of the Hall of Fame and New York Jets fan club. He really has been what makes the publica tion click over the past three years. He brings in wonderful ideas for sto ries, design changes and graphics week in and week out. His work has taken the tabloid ahead 10 years in only three years time. As former SS editorjohn Manuel said in his farewell column two years ago, “If you see him, shake his hand!” The next Sport Saturday editor will certainly have his hands full without Scheef in the office. Wynn has been the only person to experience every one of the publication’s 25 issues. After slaving over theissueonW ednes day and Thursday, he turns to distribut ing the paper on Saturday. That’s amazing considering the strain a full pouch of newspapers puts on your shoulder. Personally, I’d like to thank Scheef and Wynn for helping me find my way through this job. Without them, we’d probably still be working on the Syracuse issue. Field of Dreams IfUNC goes to the Car Quest Bowl, do the players and media covering the game get free auto parts. Maybe an auto parts buffet? “I’ll take an oil filter and some spark plugs, please"... Props to Jonathan Hart and Joe Rolison. They’ve also kept this ship above water this fall. I’d love to have a quarter for every stat they’ve typed in this year. That way I’d have something to feed the parking meters... Thanks to Robbi and Todd... Don’t forget to wish Scheef and me, “Happy graduation!” If we ever figure out where our classes are meeting now, we might just graduate this December... Omar Brown sure has put some licks on opponents this year. Is he the next Jimmy Hitchcock?... Bullock’s BBQcloses at 8 p.m. Boo!...
