2 Monday, November 27,1995 Looking Cool While Keeping Toasty on Minds of Fashion Conscious ■ Velvets and corduroys are popular materials to keep out Jack Frost this season. BY TEJAN R. HICHKAD STAFF WRITFR As “Old Man Winter” prepares to strike the area, most students can only think of bundling up to try and keep toasty. But for many people, it is just as important to look cool during winter as it is to stay warm. Anna Medinger, a manager at Barr-Ee Station on Franklin Street, said winter, like most other seasons, saw its fair share of fashions and trends. While the most im portant thing for people was to keep warm, she said fashion was never forgotten. “The big thing for women right now seems to be velvet,” Medinger said. “Vel vet jackets are a big seller, and they don’t seem to show any signs of going out of style right now.” Medinger said that along with velvet, women were buying corduroy pants —but not jackets—and low-riders, pants featur ing a low waist which sits below the navel. “The low-riders are a fashion that origi nated in the ’7os,” she said. “Women are also buying a lot of sweaters, everything from roll-neck to cashmere and cropped. Angora sweaters are also very fashionable for this season.” Meredith Erb, a junior from Plantation, Fla., said she had begun to notice a lot of women wearing corduroy and other trendy winter fabrics. “I think that the fitted look will be big Businesses See Steady Flow of Shoppers BYAMYCAPPIELLO STAFF WRITER Traditionally, the day after Thanksgiv ing is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The trend continued this past weekend, despite rainy weather in the area. However, local businesses said they had not seen an unusually large increase in business, although there was a steady flow of shoppers. “Business was very good,” said Ellis Perry, store manager of Belk-Leggett in University Mall. “For the two days to gether we did really well. And a lot of women are wearing thick-heeled shoes; they seem to be very fashionable.” Medinger said men seemed to be more consistent in certain areas of winter fash ion, but still had their own new styles and trends.“ Men usually always want jeans,” she said. “They are definitely not wearing corduroy. Bam jackets, sweaters and but ton-down shirts are still very popular with guys.” She said one of the newer styles for men was chinos, a type of cotton pant resem bling the traditional “khaki” style, but avail able in different colors. Men, she said, were also more likely than women to keep a consistent clothing style longer. “With guys, flannel shirts are still big and most of the clothes they buy will keep them warm and be fashionable,” she said. Sam Lada, a sophomore from Fayetteville, said that while fashion might be an important consideration for guys, he felt comfort was always the most impor tant thing. pleased.” Perry said the store had seen a constant stream of people all weekend. “The people who were coming into the store were buy ing, ” Perry said. “There was very little ‘just looking’ going on.” Perry said that, while the start of the Christmas shopping season had been good at Belk, it was still too early to say how the next few weeks would go. “The season just started,” Perry said. “It’s too soon to tell how we’ll do.” A store manager for The Gap on Franklin Street said the rush was not as large as expected, primarily because of the rainy weather. “The weather was a major factor for the decrease in sales,” she said. “But we did well.” Based on the amount of business con ducted on Friday, the store manager said she believed Christmas sales at The Gap would increase as the season progressed. CITY & FEATURES “For me comfort and convenience is more important than what is popular,” Lada said. “I think practicality is impor tant, but the nice thing about guys is that it seems as if fashions don’t change too much.” Lada said he thought jeans and pull overs were popular with guys, as well as flannel shirts and boots. He said everyone seemed to have their own idea of fashion. “I just really like comfort, and although fashion is not too important to me, I’m sure it is for many guys on campus, ” Lada said. Mikal Phillips, a junior from Beaufort, S.C., said men seemed to be more fashion conscious in the winter than during other parts of the year. “I think guys make a bigger deal about fashion in the cold weather because you have a larger variety of clothing to choose from,” Phillips said. “Plus you have to wear more clothes, so I think you would pay more attention to what you are wearing.” Phillip said he felt leather jackets were still popular, along with long-sleeved but ton-downs, baggy jeans and boots. He also said he thought toboggan hats were be coming popular. “Wool caps seem to be making a comeback,” he said, “but not the ones with the fuzzy balls on top.” Medinger said thermal undergarments were selling very well this season, as were full-body, thermal longjohns, called union suits. Shoes and other clothing accessories were very big this time of year, said Medinger. She said the store had a lot of requests for and sales of earmuffs and gloves, but scarves did not seem to be as fashionable as they used to be. Medinger said one of the most practical The season’s shopping trend was not limited to clothing stores this weekend. School Kid’s Records employee Stew Simpson said that, while there had been no weekend rush, sales were normal. “We had a pretty steady business," Simpson said. “At times we had people in here buying S6O to S7O worth of CD’s, and then at other times there was the occa sional slump.” Business at other area shops also seemed to be about normal. Mike Kemp, manager of Play It Again Sports at Eastgate Shop ping Center, said there had been no notice able increase in business. “I think that because of all the rain, everyone went to the mall,” Kemp said. However, Kemp said those people who did come to the store were stocking up on Christmas gifts. “The people who bought were buying quite a bit more.” 1-800-300-PREP after years of term papers class projects, and reports, nobody wants to look at your last essay test - . the Only P a P er they really want to see is your resume. kinkoT Your branch office I 0 .'A DTH/IOHN WHITE Winter fashion for many people in the Chapel Hill area includes styles which are comfortable and fashionable.
