Bailg ®ar Mppl Jarrett Tops Earnhardt, Wins Daytona THE ASSOCIATED PRESS DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Dale Earnhardt just couldn’t do any more on the track or off. He and the Richard Childress Racing team did thousands of miles of winter testing, built a car just for the Daytona 500 and put in hundreds of hours of engine work. All for another second place. Dale Jarrett held off Earnhardt on Sunday for the second time in three years on the way to victory in NASCAR’s biggest event. “We did everything we could do to be ready for this race, but it’s Daytona,” Earnhardt said with resignation and defeat in his voice. “We just didn’t have enough for ’em." Earnhardt stayed at or near the front all day, leading six times for 32 of the2oolaps on Daytona International Speedway’s 2-mile oval. Jarrett, in a Robert Yates Ford Thunderbird, drove past Earnhardt’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the lead on lap 177, with the Chevy of Ken Schrader following. Earnhardt then got back into second place the next time around and chased Jarrett the rest of the way, trying to force a mistake that would allow him to win the Daytona 500 for the first time. Earnhardt, known to NASCAR fans as The Intimidator, turned up the heat on the last lap to the delight of an estimated 150,000 spectators, who stood and cheered. Coming off the final comer, Earnhardt drove his car low on the banked oval. Jarrett dodged in front. Earnhardt went high, Jarrett went higher. Low again, Jarrett again. And for the second straight year, Earnhardt was second again —a virtual replay of the 1993 finish. Jarrett crossed the finish line 0.12 seconds 2 car-lengths in front of Earnhardt, who was just in front of Schrader. Earnhardt has finished second four times in the 500, including each of the past two years and three of the last four. He is 0-18 in the only major stock car event he has never won. “We finished second again,” Earnhardt said with a shrug. “That’s OK. We just didn’t have anything to match those Fords. “They did a good job, I reckon. I did all I could do. It was not enough.” Jarrett, 39, won for the fifth time in his career. He averaged 154.308 mph and netted $362,775 from the total purse of just more than $3.6 million. “On one of our early stops, we made an air pressure adjustment and it just messed things up real bad,” Jarrett explained. “I fell back quite a ways. But we finally got the car so it could just fly. I could go anywhere and do anything I wanted out there. That was the key.” Mark Martin’s Ford finished fourth, followed by new team mate Jeffßurton and Wally Dallenbach Jr. Sterling Marlin’s bid to become the first driver to win the Daytona 500 three straight times came to an abrupt end on lap 80, just four laps after he had moved into the lead for the first time. Marlin said, “That’s the same motor we won with here last year, but it didn’t quite make it this time.” 3/l < ?/‘fc ® 1996 United Feature Syndlcote, Inc.(NYC) HOD /AUCH 1 THINK XT'5 NOT DO I SEE COLOR IT! CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING | Travel / Vacations | MEN’S BASKETBALL FROM PAGE 14 But the Tar Heels managed to shut Staples —and Virginia—down mainly because of tighter, more aggressive trapping defense. “We had North Carolina down, ” UVa. coach Jeff Jones said. “They came back with a lot of fire, but we helped their cause at times with some poor decisions.” Which included forcing deep outside shots instead offeeding it toNormanNolan, who was Virginia’s bread-and-butter man with 12 points in the first half. “I didn’t know whether (Nolan) would hurt us that much inside, but he did,” Smith said. UNC cut its deficit to two at the 12:27 mark when Jamison connected on a turn around, and Calabria got a steal for a dunk. The score went back and forth for the next few minutes, as Mclnnis nailed a 3, and Zwikker banked home a jump hook to make the score 50-48 by the time Williams checked in. The Tar Heels opened the game with a flourish, as Mclnnis who tied a school record with eight treysatClemson—nailed a 3, then Zwikker connected on the baseline to knot the score at five. The scored bounced back and forth af ter that, as both teams led by as many as five. Calabria nailed three treys in that stanza, and Okulaja, who started the game, scored six points and pulled down four boards. “For some reason, we just didn’t have the enthusiasm in the first half,” UNC forward Antawn Jamison said.- “In the second half, for some reason, we picked it up, and when the crowd started getting into the game, we started.” : $5 OFF I Good on any tanning package of 10 I or more visils with this coupon. Monday, February 19,1996 DEFENSE FROM PAGE 14 “It’s a momentum thing, and it reminds me back when I was a freshman and sopho more, ” Calabria said. “We were able to do that every time down the court. “It’s an enjoyable thing to see guys scramble and get nervous in the trap and turn it over.” While it may be a function of UNC’s seven straight halftime deficits, or the strength of its last two opponents’ benches, the Tar Heels’ second-half defense has flour ished of late. UVa. scored 30 points in the second half, and 11 of those came in the final 59 seconds with UNC leading by 11. Against Clemson last Wednesday, the Tar Heels limited the Tigers to 19 percent shooting in the second stanza. Clemson scored only 16 points and connected on only four field goals in the second stanza. “I don’t really understand our team when it comes to (second-half defense) either,” Calabria said. “The second half, we seem to get more intensity. “When you’re down, it’s a lot easier to play, or easier to play more loosely. We do have young guys, and maybe in the first half it’s tightness; I don’t know.” “Triple w NCNB PLAZA 967-8284 W MONOHY-TRURSOAY Nil.
