Then-No. 11 North Carolina pulled off an improbable comeback victory against then-No. 9 Wake Forest. The Tar Heels trailed 41-23 with 18 minutes remaining, before going on a 42-18 run to end the game and wrap up a 65-59 win. The Tar Heels had exceeded all expectations for 1995-96, and they were in good shape for a comfortable seed in the NCAA Tournament. But now the Tar Heels are losing hold of a top-three seed in the conference tourney. As exhilarating as that victory over Wake was, that is how disappointing the last month has been for the Tar Heels. They have gone only 4-4 since defeating Wake, and one of those wins came against VMI. But even with its struggles of late, the Tar Heels have a shot at second in the ACC regular season. Tonight at 9, UNC (19-8,9-5 in the ACC) travels to Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum to face the Demon Deacons (18-5,10-4), where a win would give the Tar Heels the inside track for second place behind Georgia Tech. And it would give North Carolina 20 wins for the 26th consecutive season. Both teams are coming off dreadful losses. UNC shot 50 percent from the field but allowed Florida State 57 percent, including 65 percent from beyond the arc, in an 84-80 loss Saturday. Florida State’s James Collins ripped the Tar Heel defense for 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, including 5 of 7 from behind the arc. On the other hand, Wake Forest couldn’t find the basket. The Deacons took 69 shots to Virginia’s 38 Saturday, but the Cavs connected on6l percent, and Wake managed only 29 percent and got waxed 6749. UVa.’s Chris Alexander played all 40 minutes in the contest and held Tim Duncan to 15 points on 6-of-20 shooting. While the Deacons have lost two of their last three games, they still boast an undefeated home record, 13-0. And Wake is tops in the ACC, holding opponents to 40 percent from the field. At Joel Coliseum, they have given up 59 points per game. In the last three games at Joel, Wake has held the Tar Heels to 62,61 and 62 points, respectively, winning two of the three. In the last three games at Joel, Wake has held the Tar Heels to 62, 61 and 62 points, respectively, winning two of the three contests. © 1996 Tribune Media Services, Inc. Reid Second in Voting for All-ACC First Team THE ASSOCIATED PRESS RALEIGH—North Carolina forward Tracy Reid, along with Wendy Palmer andTora SuberofVirginia, lead the voting for the All-ACC women’s basketball team announced by The Associated Press on Monday. The team marked the first time the At lantic Coast Sports Writers Association cast ballots for the top women’s basketball players in the conference. Previously, vot ing had been done by the ACC coaches. Palmer, a 6-foot-2 senior, captured 124 out of a possible 134 points to lead the voting for the first team. She finished with 127 points. Reid, a 5-11 sophomore, was second with 110 first-team votes and 116 points. Suber was third with 88 first-team selections and 106 points. Completing the first team were Wake Forest’s Tracy Connor and Clemson’s Stephanie Ridgeway. Reid has picked up some of the slack left by the graduation of Charlotte Smith and the absence of Marion Jones. She leads the ACC in scoring and has led the Tar Heels in scoring and rebounding in 15 of the 22 games she has played this season. In her last eight games, Reid has averaged 23.4 points, B.srebounds, and shot 56.9 percent from the field. !nM*Y-suwofa.stins9iJo j TWO IF BY SEA (R) J WAITING (51 M>7•,* 1 TO EXHALE 1") Mu.iaunmt!
