But a glance at the history books reveals an interestinglikenessbetween the ‘93 squad and Brown’s ‘96 troops. Consider the ‘93 team came into spring drills having won its matchup with Mississippi State 21- 17 in the Peach Bowl the season before. That ‘93 squad then rode a surge of momentum into the spring and fall, notch ing a 10-3 slate, Brown’s best campaign since he came to Chapel Hill. Two years of bowl losses followed, and in each year UNC’s win totals dropped. So, as North Carolina enters spring drills, the question begs to be asked: Will the ‘96 Tar Heels capitalize on the bowl victory as well as the ‘93 squad did? “I certainly hope so, ” Brown said. “After four years of going to bowls, we’re at the stage in our program where we want to go to the bowls, obviously, but we also want to win them. “(Winning bowls) makes a big difference in attitude and confidence.” North Carolina may not have been short on self-assurance after its win in the Carquest, but it does lack a key ingredient to reach the postseason an experienced quarterback. And with Mike Thomas graduated and Oscar Davenport relegated to tossing footballs on the sidelines as his knee heals, UNC had only redshirt freshmen Tony Coles and Jason Peace at its disposal. That is, until the Tar Heels looked west and signed 6-foot-5, 230-pound Chris Keldorf from Manhattan Beach, Calif., injecting a sorely-needed dose of experience into the Tar Heel QB rotation. He came in with as fresh a start as everybody else.” The Tar Heels’ learning period will continue past the spring break. UNC will practice six times before the break and nine times afterwards. Last season, North Carolina became downright pass-happy at times, utilizing receivers left and right while emphasizing the running game less than in years past. One of the beneficiaries of the stepped-up passing attack in 1995 was senior tailback Leon J ohnson, who also headlined in the UNC backfield. LJ was around in ‘92 and witnessed the effects that a bowl victory had on spring drills and the fall season. “If we start strong, we can finish strong," Johnson said. “We showed we can win bowl games—we just want to cany that over to the first game against Clemson.” On Tuesday, the Tar Heels added two new recruits to the 17 they signed on Feb. 17. Stephon McQueen, a 6-5, 230-pound defensive lineman from Raleigh’s Ravenscroft School, signed a letter of intent to play with UNC. He led Ravenscroft in sacks in his senior year. Additionally, he was a McDonald’s High School All-America nominee in basketball. “He’s in the same mold as Greg Ellis the tall guy that can run,” Brown said. “He feels like he can be in the pass rush.” North Carolina also added Brian Schmitz, a punter/kicker from Park Ridge, 111. He garnered All-USA Today second team honors and hit 13 of 17 field goals last season. He also averaged 44 yards per punt. UNC Searching For Deep Supper As limitations have drastically cut the number of scholarships a team may offer (85), UNC has decided not to scholarship a deep snapper. Although UNC presently has some players practicing at the position, Brown is searching for walk-ons to try out at snapper. Those interested are requested to call the UNC football office at 966-2575 and speak to Brace Hemphill. Thursday, February 29,1996 UNC (9-3-1) to a 9-0 win in the first game and an 8-4 triumph in the nightcap. North Carolina blitzed the Spartans for 10 hits and took advantage of six UNC-G errors to run away with the first game. Lorin Slade and Jennifer Klesaris each hit two-run homers for North Carolina, while Jennifer Shelton (2-1) scattered two hits over five innings. Klesaris’ homer sparked a four-run third inning that gave the Tar Heels the eight-run lead required to end the game after five innings. Erin Chandler (1-5) took the loss for the Spartans. Kubin went 4 for 4 with two RBIs in game two, including two doubles. Brandy Arthur (5-1) picked up the win after working five and two-thirds innings, and she added two hits and scored twice for the Tar Heels. Karyn Thompson and Danielle Sekula hit homers for the Spartans (1-8). Sekula’s homer was the first of her career. Also, Kim Gaudio (0-3) took the loss for UNC-Greensboro. The Tar Heels will see their next action March 2-3 in Conway, S.C., at the Coastal Carolina Tournament. and a half minute stretch as the Tigers pulled away. Once again, though, the Wolfpack re fused to die after trailing 68-58 with 2:58 left. N.C.
