BCC,” said Ellington Graves, program
coordinator for the BCC.
The Charlotte office, which announced
its closing Friday, plans to continue sup
porting organizations allotted funds for
this year. Benefield said she was optimistic
about the support of the Jordan family.
“Nothing is yet firm, but we are looking
forward to their continued involvement,”
she said.
Deloris Jordan was unavailable for com

the Charlotte office declined to discuss
details of the closing.
UNIVERSITY
TICKETS
FROM PAGE 1
Until this season, the NCAA required
that the host site give each participating
school 250 tickets. Even though that
amount has been raised, it still causes prob
lems when first-round sites are played at
small arenas such as the Richmond
Coliseum, which seats only 12,500.
“(The ticket problem) very seldom hap
pens because it’s not often that we play so
close to home,” Smith said.
Last year, the Educational Foundation
was allotted between 110 and 120 tickets to

cal specialty ranked second. The user-in
teraction graphics area of computer sci
ence tied for second with Brown Univer
sity and Carnegie Mellon University.
Doctoral science programs were evalu
ated on scholarship, curriculum and qual
ity of faculty and graduate students.
“Those are strong rankings,” Dean of
the College of Arts and Sciences Stephen
Birdsall said. “I think they show the excel
lent value and the quality these units offer
UNC’s first-round site in Tallahassee, Fla.
When the Tar Heels played in Winston-
Salem in 1993, however, the foundation
was allotted only seven tickets.
“We usually end up with what’s left
over at the end,” Smith said.
Game Time Set
UNC will play New Orleans in Friday
night’s final game at Richmond Coliseum,
approximately 30 minutes after the con
clusion ofthe 7:40 p.m. Texas Tech-North
ern Illinois game.
The game will be televised on WRAL;
WCHL will broadcast live from the arena.
“This is a nice affirmation of
the excellence that we've
worked hard to build and
maintain. ”
THOMAS BOWERS
Associate Dean, School of Journalism
and Mass Communication
to the state.”
Birdsall also pointed out that the same
faculty members who taught in the gradu
ate programs in the chemistry, biology and
computer science departments also taught
undergraduate students.
Two other schools, the School of Edu
cation and the School of Law, ranked in
the top 40.
While the School of Education placed
32nd overall, a reputable survey of school
superintendents placed it sixth.
The law school placed 34th overall, but
it ranked 19th in a survey of lawyers and
judges.

fast relief from the nagging ache of taxes, we
recommend TIAA-CREF SRAs. SRAs are tax
deferred annuities designed to help build additional
assets money that can help make the difference
between living and living well after your working
years are over.
Contributions to your SRAs are deducted from your
salaiy on a pretax basis. That lowers your current
taxable income, so you start saving on federal and,
in most cases, state and local income taxes right away.
What’s more, any earnings on your SRAs are also
tax deferred until you receive them as income. That
can make a big difference in how painful your tax
bill is eveiy year.
