Daily aar Urel Men’s Lax Looks to Rebound Vs. Duke BY REUBEN SACK STAFF WRITER Despite recording its first loss of the year to Princeton on Sunday, North Carolina’s men’s lacrosse team is good enough to beat any team in the nation, coach Dave Klarmann said. “I think we can beat every team we play," Klarmann said. “I think we can beat Princeton if we play them again. I think we can beat Duke. I’m not saying we will, but that goes for every team on our schedule. ” The 5-1 Tar Heels will have the oppor tunity to put Klarmann’s theory to the test at Fetzer Field at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they face the No. 10 Blue Devils. “It is an intense rivalry, and of course Bizarro IS : 1 f WELL, THERE'S s certainly no Dilbert —ASOK THE INTERN AS AN INTERN, YOUR ASSIGNMENTS WONT 5E AS GLAMOROUS AS MINE, BUT YOU’LL THE Daily Crossword by William Canine 47 General "Jeb" 51 Pour 53 Bargain hunter 54 Joint 55 Target for Maddux 57 Show contempt 58 Incite 59 Hibernia 60 Sombreros 61 Strikes solidly 62 ERA or RBI DOWN 1 Casts off 2 Sprite 3 Killer whales 4 Afternoon affairs 5 in (interrupts) 6 Tennis shots ACROSS 1 Blemish 5 Musical symbol 9 Commotion 13 Engage 14 Residence 15 Malmo native 16 Arthur’s weapon 18 “Cheers" waitress 19 Crowns 20 Fannie of cookbook fame 21 “Open —” 22 Italian city 23 Crosby, Stills and— -25 RAF hero 26 Needlefish 29 Like a lot 32 Church projection 34 Arrived 35 Dies 36 Oust 37 Organic compound 38 Marshes 39 Turner of old films 40 Inclusion of an item 41 Corrode 42 Hideaway 43 Stone's “ for Life” 45 NY city rA|TTpTsMc[H]A|pM eIcTl a It" l o'a’mHo u c hlloa t h Bio N aa O T T O a S A N T 0~ ill" s Mi T E A R G A S M 1 E L T I | N G To T | S U R E ■ |sit o¥T|a sTaH BG | T E E Tl H Aa N G E L — s BA J 3 iR s J_J?_ A: Hilt A D N G| I MM I G R ANTS CELLO ■■ ■ STOOL A N E|T Y R E|S I0 E c .' It’s not like Carolina is 50- 0 over the past four years.” Klarmann said his players’ self-esteem did not concern him. “Duke knocks that confidence out of you every time,” Klarmann said. “I don’t worry about their confidence, I let them worry about that... I don’t get involved with them emotionally. I don’t get involved with them on that level. That is not my job. “My needs are simple—l want them to win.” The Blue Devils beat No. 18 Navy on Saturday 15-6 to improve their record to 3- 3. Japan’s Ito Lands 4 Triples, Leads Qualifiers at Worlds THE ASSOCIATED PRESS EDMONTON, Alberta —Midori Ito is back, promising to get better before the end of the week. Ito won her qualifying group Monday at the World Figure Skating Championships, even though she stepped out of her trademark triple axel and two-footed a triple salchow. In her first international event as an Olympic-eligible skater since the 1992 Games, the Japanese star impressed the seven judges, finishing first with all of them. “I’m not 100 percent satisfied, ” Ito said through an interpreter. “But it was good to be on the rink and to get a feeling of being at worlds. From that aspect, it was very helpful. “But as far as the skating, I’m still not satisfied.” Ito did well enough, landing four triples and showing some of the verve and athletic skills that helped her win the 1989 world title and a silver medal at Albertville. She just wasn’t overwhelming, which probably isn’t fair to expect after so few major competitions since she turned professional after the ’92 Olympics. Tara Lipinski, who is half Ito’s age, was second in the group, from which 12 skaters advanced. Tonia Kwiatkowski, the other American woman who had to qualify Michelle Kwan already was in the main draw after finishing fourth at the 1995 worlds was fourth in her sector. f SEE? /AY ASSIGNMENT HAS THE WORD “STATUS" [BUILT RIGHT IN. f fwwxfTX i jj J/ff/ffc © 1996 United Feature Syndicate. Roommates Strong Start, Slow Finish: Game Symbolized Season As wins became few for North Caro lina toward the end of the season, the NCAA tournament became a shield, a way to block out dwindling expectations and a way to keep perspective on the ulti mate goal. Success in the solitary tournament could reverse the disappointment, which bur dened North Carolina during the second half of the season. With a long enough run, a measure of achievement could be re gained. In the tournament, the proximity and the bumping and grinding of the ACC would be long gone. There would be no familiarity, and after all, in first games with teams this season the Tar Heels were 17-3. In meetings after the first one, the Tar Heels were a lowly 3- 6. The tournament would be anew season replete with chances for redemption. But in its quest to prove the early season was no fluke, UNCs went too far. In the first round the Tar Heels were too dominant, withstanding the best New Or leans could throw at them and responding with a 49-9 mn en route to an 83-62 vic tory. The derailed train was back on its Sanctions on Seminoles Will Be Announced Today THE ASSOCIATED PRESS TALLAHASSEE, Fla. —Florida State finds out Tuesday what sanctions it faces from the NCAA for a shoe store shopping spree paid for by sports agents for Semi noles football players during the team’s 1993 championship season. The university won’t face major sanc tions if the NCAA infractions committee follows an earlier recommendation by the NCAA enforcement staff that the rules violations were secondary. But the rules committee is not bound by that recom mendation. FSU would not be banned from bowls or television appearances for a secondary violation, but could face a fine or loss of some scholarships. Coming off a loss to Clemson in which the Tar Heels failed to score over the final six minutes, they may have lept too far. It wasn’t as if they peaked, as the overwhelm ing win was more typical of the team's up and down play rather than a re-emergence. “Maybe we can play as well, but we’re the underdog in my mind,” Smith said. It never looked as though the Tar Heels believed Smith. The energy and intensity they displayed against the Privateers never made it to the second round. Instead, the Tar Heels closed out the tee, however, has the power to decide the violations were more serious and impose major sanctions on Florida State. FSU has acknowledged 14NCAA rules violations found in its own investigation. $3 OFF Any Nails/Waxing Combo MAILS WAXING 4 s2B Underarms sll HIM ■ ™ Wn * Sls sy*brow S8 I % \t Half Lege S2O If 942-7177 JLNails* Tanning‘Waxing‘Massages "rain nr O 3 miles ,rom campus, 15-501 S. & L_ _2*,^_Smlh Levemoada^StarPoint The world’s largest student travel organization. 800-777-0112 sSS ROMANO’S PIZZA KTTPHFTNJ Fast, Free Delivery Umch & 929-5005 Dfemerl Fettuccine Alfredo 1 AUredo 1 6 - 25 2. Wanted to Rent | Tuesday, March 19,1996 season with the inconsistent play that had plagued them the second half of the sea son, as unheralded No. 3 seed Texas Tech pounded the Tar Heels 92-73. Tech bombed 12 3-pointers and got its biggest lift when Damn Ham shattered the backboard eight minutes into the game. The Tar Heels never recovered. Instead the game represented a microcosm of the season strong start, slow finish. The season’s ups and downs could have been the necessaiy infusion of freshmen. With so many players who hadn’t seen much action, inconsistency was inevitable. After starting the ACC with seven wins in eight games, consistency disappeared, and mid-game lapses set in. It may have been the lack of a leader. With so much talent gone from the ‘95 Final Four team, leadership was thrust onto unfamiliar shoulders. At times the Tar Heels were spectacular, but when things went wrong the inexperience left them no one to turn to. Most likely it may have been a combina tion of the two that left the Tar Heels with seven losses in their final 12 games and out of the Sweet Sixteen for the second time in three years. Eight of the violations involved a Novem ber 1993 shopping spree to a Foot Locker store at a local mall where several players received about $6,000 worth of merchan dise paid for by unlicensed sports agents.
