The Wild cats got it with a 76-67 victory NCAA Championship Syracuse 67 Kentucky 76 over Syracuse on Monday night, a loss that earned the Orangemen the respect few gave them going in. Blue Devils BYROBBIPICKERAL SPORTS EDITOR Five years ago, Jenny Slingluff and Kerstin Kimel battled each other on a women’s lacrosse field for an NCAA cham pionship. It was 1991. Slingluff, Virginia’s most potent offensive weapon, was marked by Kimel, Maryland’s best defensive stopper. SlinglufFs Cavs won that day; Kimel’s Terps took revenge the next year for the same title. The women have been ACC rivals .com petitive champions and friends. Tonight, they meet again—this time as first-year coaches. When North Carolina (8-1) and Duke (2-7) meet at 7 tonight at Fetzer Field, the rivalry that began in their college years will continue, but this time in competitive shades of blue. “I think Kerstin and I both respect each other a lot,” Slingluff said. “I know that both she and I want to see a clean, crisp game, and I think we will. And I think we have both adopted the Carolina-Duke ri valiy, so we both want to win. ” The Tar Heels have turned in a better than-expected beginning to UNC’s first yearprogram. North Carolina rides a seven game winning streak into tonight’s matchup, while the Blue Devils, another first-year team, broke a three-game losing skid when they beat Stanford on Saturday. “Duke doesn’t have a great record right now, but they have a good team and a lot of talent,” Slingluff said. Amy Murnick and Meghan McLaughlin lead the Blue Devils with a combined 28 goals and eight assists. Natalie Lamarque has started all but one game in goal, com- and freshman Ron Mercer. And, of course, the famed pressure defense and the ability to use college basketball’s deepest roster. Syracuse, a 14-point undeTdog, has the most NCAA tournament victories without a title. A 36th NCAA win would have meant a first national championship. Now, this Syracuse team joins the one-point los ers to Indiana in the 1987 championship game in sustaining the most bitter defeats in school history. Delk, voted the outstanding player, fin ished with 24 points and tied the champi onship game record with seven 3-pointers. The Wildcats finished with 12 3s, critical in cracking Syracuse’s 2-3 zone. Kentucky tied the title game record for 3s by a team. Mercer came up with a career-high 20 points, all but six of the points the deep Kentucky bench provided. John Wallace, the Syracuse senior who returned to school rather than lift |'/ enter the NBA last year, finished with 29 points and 10 rebounds. But he left the game in tears when he fouled out with 1:06 to play and Kentucky leading 72-67. In fact, Kentucky called a timeout with 5:24 to play because its play ers looked exhausted. Delk missed a 3-pointer, but Walter McCarty tipped it in, and after Jason Cipolla missed a driving jumper for Syra cuse, Derek Anderson got the backbreaker of the 12 3-pointers with 3:52 left. He missed a couple of minutes in the second half after he injured his left wrist in a collison. The Orangemen turned the ball over on each of the three possessions he missed. Syracuse couldn't have asked for more from the zone in the first half as Kentucky struggled with its shooting from every where. With the exception of Delk's three 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes, the Wildcats were missing layups, drives, short jumpers and long ones. A 3-pointer by Wallace with three min utes left in the half tied it 28-28, then Mercer and Delk combined for all the points in a 12-2 run over the next 1:49.
