Navy salvage ship leaves
TWA site after six weeks
SMITHTOWN, N.Y. With more
than 60 percent of TWA Flight 800 re
covered and two debris fields mostly
cleared, the Navy salvage-and-rescue ship
USS Grasp headed home Tuesday.
'The vessel was sent on its way back to
its home port in Virginia, and divers and
the Grasp’s sister ship, the USS Grapple,
will began focusing on the debris field
farthest from Kennedy Airport.
As the USS Grasp prepared to lift
anchor, Navy Rear Adm. Edward K.
Kristensen thanked about 100 divers and
other crew on board.
He told them that they “can walk a
little taller around Norfolk for a long,
longtime.”
Divers were running out of wreckage
to collect in the two debris fields closest
to the airport, National Transportation
Safety Board vice chairman Robert
Francis said Monday.
“This is little stuff that’s being brought
up,” he said. “There’s no large pieces of
wreckage out there. ... The size of the
pieces is starting to diminish.”

Some sizable pieces, including parts
of the tail, wings and fiiselage sections,
are believed to remain in the debris field
farthest from the airport.
The Grasp, equipped with a robot and
special video and scanning equipment,
was brought in a week after the July 17
crash to lift heavy objects. The pieces of
the plane that have been recovered were
being reconstructed at a Long Island han
gar.
Investigators believe the explosion that
brought down the Paris-bound jet, killing
all 230 aboard, originated in the plane’s
midsection, somewhee near the center
fuel tank.
All but 23 victims have been recov
ered and identified.
The Boeing 747 had been used to trans
port U.S. military personnel to the Middle
East within the last few years, investiga
tors said.
But they would not say if they believed
that was how explosive substances got
on the plane.
“Certainly it’s the type of thing we’re
interested in,” said James Kallstrom, the
FBI official heading the agency’s investi
gation.
“Obviously, ordnance is not autho
rized to go onto commercial aircraft trans
porting military personnel.”

The identity of the Iraqis arrested at
the end of a 16-hour drama on Sudan
Airways Flight 150 was not disclosed.
Police also detained six female relatives
of the men and are caring for two chil
dren.

Iraqi government military advisers too
frightened by Saddam Hussein’s purges
to return home.
The hijack of the Airbus 310 —with
171 captive passengers and 13 crew mem
bers aboard ended around noon.

of negotiations at Stansted Airport, con

Bosnian elections, admitting Tuesday
that plans for local elections have run
into trouble.
The postponement came as the Penta
gon announced that 5,000 Army troops
will be deployed to Bosnia.
The troops will provide extra security
during the scheduled withdrawal of
American peacekeepers four months
from now in December.
The extra security reflects a shift from
implementing the Dayton peace accords
that ended the 3-year-long Bosnian war
to planning a safe pullout of the NATO
led peacekeeping force.
Foreign election monitors said voting
would go ahead for national and regional
offices. Elections of municipal candi
dates, however, would be delayed indefi
nitely.
The elections are a crucial aspect of
the Dayton peace accord.
Even though the accords provided for
possible postponement of the municipal
voting, officials had hoped that candi
dates at all levels could be elected at the
same time.
Having elections at the same time
would have provided the greatest pos
sible stability for Bosnia.
Bosnia’s nationalist parties espe
cially the Bosnian Serbs have been
accused of trying to fix the outcome of
local elections. The accusers say that the
Serbs havebeen informingrefugees where
they can go to cast their ballots.

polls conducted before the start of this
week’s Democratic National Conven
tion.
Clinton also maintained a 22-point
advantage in a New York survey re
leased today.
The New York survey suggested Re
publican presidential nominee Bob Dole
got no public-opinion “bounce” in that
generally Democratic, electoral vote-rich
state from his party’s convention earlier
this month.
The national surveys, like others in
the past week, find that whatever con
vention bump Dole got has diminished
somewhat.
Clinton and Vice President A1 Gore
were supported by 49 percent.
Dole and Jack Kemp were supported
by 32 percent of those polled, and Re
form Party nominee Ross Perot by 8
percent in a sampling of 775 registered
voters.
The voters were polled Wednesday
through Sunday for the Politics Now
Internet site by ICR Survey Research
Group.
The sampling error margin for the poll
was plus or minus 4 percentage points.;
That means that Clinton and Gore could;
be supported by between 45 and 54 per
cent of people polled.
That race was 47-34-9 in an Aug. 16 to
Aug. 20PoliticsNowpollthatdidn’tname
Gore and Kemp.
Dole had narrowed the margin to 8
points in an Aug. 14 to Aug. 18 poll. He
hadbeendown 24points in a Politics Now
poll that the poll company conducted in
early August.
