in Associated Press rankings
While North Carolina’s defense shone
in the Tar Heels’ 16-0 victory over Geor
gia Tech Saturday at Kenan Stadium, the
shutout wasn’t impressive enough to
move UNC up in the polls.
Sunday’s Associated Press Top 25
ranked the Tar Heels 11th, the same as
last week’s poll: “We’re really not con
sidering the polls,”

it whipped Clemson4s-0. Then, follow
ing the Tar Heels’ 27-10 win at Syracuse
on Sept. 7, UNC jumped to No. 13.

In 1993, UNC was 3-0 and ranked
13th when it squared off against top
rated Florida State in Chapel Hill.
And when the Tar Heels roll into Tal
lahassee, Fla., Saturday to tussle with the
Seminoles, the circumstances will be
much the same as in ‘93. No. 11 UNC is
again 3-0, and the ‘Noles are second in

‘questionable’ at the beginning of the season.
Juniors Omar Brown and Terry Billups were the only expe
rienced players returning to UNC’s final line of defense.
But Billups was sidelined after shoulder surgery and Brown
moved to safety, leaving Bly and sophomore Robert Williams
as the starting comerbacks.
Their speed, experience and nerves were questioned. Team
mates say they’ve proven the answers.
“I don’t have to worry about anything back there,” Tar Heel
linebacker Kivuusama Mays said. “... When they throw a ball,
the first thing that hits my mind is interception. I don’t even
doubt it. (The secondary) will intercept it or they’ll knock it
down.
“Dre’ Bly is fantastic. He’s a young player, he’s sharp and he
celebrates a lot. He comes up and makes big plays. He’s got my
confidence. I enjoy watching him play, and I enjoy being out
there with him.”
Bly’s hat trick gives him four for the year.
He said he also had a trio of interceptions as a junior at
Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, Va., but never
since.
“To have the excitement we had today,... you have to have
playmakers, and Dre’ is a playmaker,” Brown said.
“And when he excites the fans so much, he excites our
football team team. And that’s when you’re good.”

dium, as the Tar Heels dropped the quar
terback five times. Defensive lineman
Vonnie Holliday slammed Tech quarter
back Joe Hamilton to the ground twice,
and fellow linemen Rick Terry, Greg
Ellis and Teto Simpson each sacked the
quarterback once.
Add to the sack total UNC’s six tack
les for losses, and the Tech ball carriers
spent much of their time dodging Tar
Heels in the backfield.
“We pressured (Hamilton) tremen
dously,” UNC linebacker Kivuusama
Mays said.
“As you can see, (UNC cornerback)
Dre’ Bly with three picks, batted passes
(Hamilton) had to scramble a lot.”

The Duke fans apparently noticed,
yelling to anyone within earshot that the
score was wrong.
“I thought it was 13-10, too,” Sagula
said. “I asked them at the timeout, ‘ls
that the correct score?’ and they said,
‘Yes.’”
Duke managed a 14-13 advantage on
a kill by JamiEdiger. But UN C fought off
match point to tie the game at 14.
Errors began to take their toll on the
Blue Devils, who yielded the the Tar
Heels the next four points off hitting
errors.
UNC put Duke away after a kill by
Carlson and a block by Berg for the win.
“We played clutch at the end, which
we haven’t done yet,” Carlson said. “At
14-14, we played aggressively and that
resulted in the win.”
For the match, Carlson led the Tar
Heels with 26 kills, while Starks and Tori
Seibert added2okills. Seibertproduceda
game-high .452 hitting percentage.

“I had numerous opportunities," Bar
ber said. “Nancy had a couple, Cindy
had a couple.
”It’s tough luck, really. It’s frustrating
when you’re out there, but... hey, not
much you can do about it.”
Chellew victimized the Tar Heels again
deep into the second overtime.
Awarded a penalty stroke off a UNC
infraction in the circle, Chellew stoically
wristed the game-winner past a sprawl
ing Withrow.
“I was just trying to concentrate on the
ball and just react and hopefully I’d get
it,” Withrow said. “But she just got the
best of me today.”
The upset was an even larger shock
considering the Tar Heels’ dominating
performance against UVa. on Saturday.
