N.C. House of Representatives and Or
ange County Board of Commissioners
would attend. Each candidate will be
given two minutes to make an opening
statement, and then field questions.
She said the forum would focus on
such issues as early childhood concerns,
women in the workplace and child care.
Bushnell said she had received posi
tive responses from all candidates except
U.S. Rep. Fred Heineman, R-N.C., who
did not respond. “I think especially in
this election candidates understand that
these issues are important to families and
will count heavily to voters,” she said.
Bushnell said the public was encour
aged to attend. “There’s really nothing
like hearing the candidates speak and
seeing them in person to help decide who
really deserves your vote,” she said.

Julia White, press secretary for U.S.
House candidate David Price, who is
running against Heineman, said Price
would attend the forum.
“A lot of people don’t get the chance
to meet the people who want to represent
them in Congress,” White said.
N.C. Rep. Joe Hackney, D-Orange,
who is running for re-election, said he
had chosen to participate in the forum
because of his record on women’s and
children’s issues. “It will point out differ
ences between the Republican and Demo
cratic candidates," he said.
Hackney said he thought Smart Start
was an important issue. He said it was
important to equip children for school, to
take care of their medical needs and pro
vide them with quality day care.
“If we are to move forward in our
educational programs, this is an essential
component,” Hackney said.
Patrick Mulkey, candidate for the
Orange County Board of Commission
ers, said he would speak at the forum.
Mulkey said he thought affordable child
care was an important issue. He said
when his child was young, “one of the
problems we had was finding quality day
care at a reasonable price. I’m sure this is
still a problem.”

I used to scoff at the notion of coffee
table books. You know, the huge
books with all the glossy pictures.
That is until now. I’ve finally found a
book I can appreciate.
Documenting the prevalent world of
cyberspace and how it weaves its way
into our lives has become of utmost im
portance to scholars and cyberjunkies
alike. Recently, one such record was si
multaneously published in print and on
the Internet.
“24 hours in Cyberspace,” printed by
the people that brought us the colorful
“A day in the life of ...” series about
different countries, serves as a “digital
time capsule” of events that unfolded on
Feb. 8. These events all have a common
link in that they used the vast world of the
Internet in some way, shape or form to go
through that recorded moment of their
life.
The headquarters of the images at

tics of the book and lays out how to

“Sex, Lies and

Each category
has from eight to 10 essays with web
addresses that are related to the text.
Some sites have sound bites to hear live
interviews with the photographers on
assignment.
For example, at “Sex, Lies and
Websites,” web surfers bare their per
sonal diaries, brides are found through
web personals and cybersoaps use the
new medium.
Two of these essays caught my eye.
First, “E-mail-orderbrides” recountshow
Soviet women are picked up by men in

The related site, Cyberpersonals from

shade has links to an international mar
riage bureau and gives information on
how to join the singles of the world. I
don’t know about you, but I’m kind of
sympathetic towards these unsuspecting
Soviet women.
On a lighter note, but on the same
scamming wave length, the “Tune in

cybersoap stars hamming it up for then
online shows. One popular soap, “The
