According to Congressional Quarterly’s online service, Heineman supports spending more money for pris ons, limiting the number of appeals al lowed for death-row inmates, and in creasing penalties for illegal drugs and for possession of illegal firearms. Heineman opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest or danger to the mother’s life. A self-styled fiscal conservative, Heineman supported the balanced-bud get amendment and wants a three-fifths majority of Congress to approve any tax increase. He has advocated allowing lower- and middle-class parents to de duct college expenses from their taxes. BY ANNE CORBETT STAFF WRITER David Price said he rejected partisan politics, advocated a balanced budget and would work for education and envi ronmental reform. “I am determined to get past partisan politics and stale ideology to seriously address this nation’s challenges in bal ancing the budget, in education and in the environment,” Price said. “People are disgusted with the way politicians are bickering. During his previ ous term in Congress, Price proposed legislation to balance the budget and wants to continue along those same lines. “People became very skeptical of poli ticians after the government shut down. Politicians have an obligation to be able to say at the end of the day that they have delivered results to the American people. ” Price has vowed to protect the student loan program and to give additional tax credits for families to pay for college educations.
