Coach Mike Ditka has said he wants to create a more competitive environ ment for veteran starting quarterback Jim Everett. Sources report Manning will stay at Tennessee KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Peyton Manning, by far the best pro prospect among college quarterbacks, is leaning toward staying at Tennessee rather than entering the NFL draft. Manning said Tuesday he will announce his decision Wednesday at a 1:30 p.m. EST news conference on the Tennessee campus. Various sources, including agents and NFL officials, said Manning is likely to remain at Tennessee. “I’d say it’s 99 percent sure that he’ll stay,” said one source, who asked not to be identified, adding he had spoken with Manning on Monday night. BY JOHN SWEENEY STAFF WRITER Amid all the hype surrounding this weekend’s ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament, it’s easy for some of North Carolina’s lesser-known sports to get lost in the crowd. Yet the UNC fencing team will be heading out to begin its own bit of March Madness on Saturday in this case, the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Fencing Tournament. Eighteen Tar Heels (18-11 men, 23-7 women) were selected to compete in the tournament, with their bids for the NCAA championships on the line. “This is actually one of the smaller qualifying fields we’ve had,” UNC coach Ron Miller said. “Part of that is due to injuries and to the fact that sev eral of our best fencers didn’t get enough bouts.” Packer to help Nebraska with conditioning, training THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LINCOLN, Neb. Green Bay Packer Tyrone Williams, sentenced to six months in jail for firing two shots at an occupied car, will serve part of his time helping to condition athletes at the University of Nebraska. Williams began serving time Feb. 24, a month after he played for the Packers in the Super Bowl, after pleading no contest and being convicted of third degree assault in the Jan. 30, 1994, shooting. Several fencers traveling to the regionals aren’t regular starters. Qualification for regionals, to be held at Haverford College in Philadelphia, is based on perfor mance during the regular season. Miller said a 60 percent win rate was usually enough for qualification, depending on one’s competition. From there, performance at regionals plays a big role in determining whether a fencer proceeds to the NCAAs. So the Tar Heels know they need to get their minds on the task at hand. Any slip-ups could end their season. “We’ve got to set everything else aside,” junior Jason Wells said. “We can’t be preoccupied with schoolwork versity student Brooke Bohac. The two shots hit the car’s rear quar ter panel. Connie Lofgren-Osbom of Lancaster County Corrections and Ron Flansburg of Lancaster County District Court Probation recommended denying Williams’ request. Lofgren-Osborn said her recommen dation was “based on the nature and severity of the defendant’s charge.” But Lancaster County District Judge Bernard McGinn approved the work release plan on Friday, and Williams began work Monday. © 1997 Tribune Media Services, Inc. Each fencer could participate in more than 20 bouts this weekend. “That’s almost a third of the season in one day,” Miller said. With that in mind, Miller will cut back on conditioning this week and focus instead on the mental aspects of fencing. “There's basically a lot more bouting, a lot more experimentation with tactics, trying to iron out the things that we’re doing well this season,” Miller said. “The last two weeks, we’ve tried to get back into the idea of fencing in a pool where there actually is elimina tion.” For Laura Johnson, a senior epeeist who has been to the tournament twice before, this weekend will mark her last opportunity to qualify for the NCAAs. Johnson has been putting plenty of emphasis on that bouting in hopes of improving her ability to deal with the pressure of the postseason. But senior epeeist Lilian Kizer, who has advanced to the NCAAs the past two years, said even the strong qualifying field would be ben eficial for the Tar Heels. “It will be a higher level of competi tion, which is good, because that makes us perform better,” Kizer said. 1 Month Unlimited £AQ Tanning For 3 Months Odd || J | Unlimited W r tywi 942-7177 Hours: Mon-Fri 8-9 Sat 9-8 Sun 11-6 // w . n q 3 miles from campus, 15-501 S. & at star Point 12 ~ l* " I HF. Wells, with a record of 64-15, promises to be one of the top Tar Heel performers, as does Kizer. “There’s nobody there that I can’t beat,” Wells said. In feet, that’s pretty much how Miller feels about his entire team who, thanks to preparation and intensity, might be ready to surprise a few people. “Physically we’re ready,” Miller said. “We’re in good shape, our injuries have improved, and I think mentally we’re pretty well-balanced.” | Services | 24 HOUR CRISIS line for domestic vio lence Durham County: 688-2312 Orange County: 929-7122 PREG.
