Nearby residence halls and a day care center were evacuated for fear of a sec ond, delayed bomb blast. Police Chief Mike Coppage said late Thursday afternoon no other explosive was found. He said no one had claimed respon sibility by Thursday evening. Jim Cavanaugh of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said the bomb appeared to be homemade and not intended to blow up the entire clin ic. “It was a smaller device intended to kill or injure,” he said. FBI Agent Joseph Lewis said the bomb apparently was in a package, but it was not immediately known what kind. STATE & NATIONAL A year ago, two bombs went off an hour apart at a clinic in Atlanta, injuring seven in the second blast. That bombing is still unsolved. Hours after the explosion in Birmingham, the surrounding area remained sealed off while bomb experts in masks and heavy protective gear combed over it. “We still have a hot scene. We’re being very cautious because of what happened in Atlanta,” said the ATF’s Brian Lett. The bomb went off about 7:30 a.m. just outside the main entrance of the New Woman All Women Health Care clinic, rocking nearby buildings at the university and leaving a crater outside the blackened, wrecked entryway. The explosion occurred as clinic employees were arriving but about 30 minutes before doors normally open to patients. “We were shaking. We were 30 sec onds away from being in that parking lot,” said Terry Hermes, who was taking his wife, Lisa, to her counseling job at the clinic. Her charred clothes were partly tom away. The victims were identified as Officer Robert Sanderson, 35, and nurse Emily Lyons, 41. Both were from Birmingham. The police officer “had gotten off work and he had just gotten there,” Coppage said. Gov. Fob James, a Republican who opposes abortion, offered full state sup port in the investigation, saying, “I can not think of any more cowardly and rep rehensible act.” He said those responsible should be “tracked down, indicted, convicted and executed." The blast shook a second abortion clinic a block away, the Summit Women’s Clinic, knocking things off the wall. The UNC Institute on Aging received a five-year, $3.1 million federal grant Thursday to create a systemwide Center on Minority Aging. “The minority elderly don’t use cer tain health services as much as whites,” said Elizabeth Mutran, director of the new center and professor of health behavior and health education at the School of Public Health. “We want to understand the differ ence. Is it because families are filling in or if there are barriers to services or care.” The center, made up of UNC-CH, East Carolina University, Fayetteville State University and North Carolina Central University, will have several goals. It will increase research partnerships, address social problems in health care, screen for chronic diseases in elderly minority groups and fund pilot studies. NCCU and FSU will serve as the community outreach base, and ECU Actors from the London Stage perform William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER- dgt NIGHT'S DREAM Ms* Friday, January 30 at 7:30 pm Guy B. But community support is necessary for the center’s success. “I have four graduate students work ing for me, and they will be talking to undergraduate organizations on campus to start working within the community,” Mutran said. Roy Carroll, senior vice president of academic affairs for the UNC system, said one important aspect of the center was its ability to unite different pro grams. “One real significant impact is that it serves as one more concrete vehi cle to bring together disciplines and school lines,” Carroll said. John Hatch, professor of health edu cation at NCCU, agreed cooperation between the universities was important. “Collaboration clearly strengthens the quality of work,” Hatch said. Carroll added that the center had an important role beyond the educational world. “This is not a problem simply for health affairs and health schools.” Minority aging is a social issue that affects the entire world, Mutran said.“l think it is a problem of the Western world, but Asian countries have even greater issues with aging,” she said. “It’s a worldwide phenomenon.”
