Tar Heel rowers compete
against foes from Big Ten
The North Carolina rowing team
travelled North this weekend, compet
ing against Michigan and Ohio State on
Saturday before facing Michigan State
on Sunday.
In Saturday’s ACC-Big Ten Double
Dual meet, the Tar Heels won the Ist
Novice 8, topping OSU by seven sec
onds. UNC’s 2nd varsity 8 lost to both
Michigan and Ohio State.
In Sunday’s competition, UNC’s
Novice 8 beat two Spartan boats. The
Tar Heels’ Varsity 4 was also victorious.
The Junior Varsity 8, Varsity 8 and
Novice 4 all took second to the
Spartans.
Softball ousted by Lobos
in tourney quarterfinal
The North Carolina softball team
won all four of its games in pool play
before falling 8-5 to New Mexico in the
quarterfinals of the Buzz Classic tour
nament at the A1 Bishop Softball
Complex in Marietta, Ga.
The Tar Heels (22-16) topped Butler
by an 8-4 score and defeated Maine 10-
0 on Friday, then knocked off Georgia
Southern 2-0 and Cal St. Fullerton 6-5
on Saturday to advance to single-elimi
nation quarterfinal play.
UNC gave up seven runs in the first
inning against the Lobos and never
climbed back into the contest despite
home runs from senior Brandy Arthur
and sophomore Crystal Henderson.
Pacers held to record low
in IBfoint loss to Spurs
INDIANAPOLIS The Indiana
Pacers set an NBA record by scoring the
fewest points in a game since the advent
of the shot clock, losing 74-55 to the
San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.
The Pacers, who scored 133 points
on Friday, shot 27 percent and had nine
points in the fourth period.
The combined point total of 129
points was the fourth lowest since the
24-second clock was introduced in the
1954-55 season.
Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 24
points, while David Robinson had 13
points and 10 rebounds.
Hurricanes upset Flyers,
move closer to playoffs
PHILADELPHIA Carolina
couldn’t have picked a better time to
snap an 11-game winless streak, beating
the Flyers to keep playoff hopes alive.
“We knew that we needed an all
around good effort from each and every
guy,” said Keith Primeau, who had a
goal and an assist as Carolina took
advantage of sloppy Philadelphia
defense for a 4-2 win Saturday.
Trevor Kidd made 22 saves and
Martin Gelinas had the game-winner.
The Flyers defeated the ’Canes 3-1
on Sunday in Greensboro.

The trend of losing to higher-ranked
teams continued Saturday as the Tar
Heels suffered a 16-9 setback against
fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins in front of
4,589 fans in Baltimore.

Martin’s second goal of the game
gave UNC a 5-3 lead with 10:49 to play
in the half, but JHU’s A.J. Haugen
scored consecutive goals before halftime
to tie the score at five. Then, 1:36 into
the third quarter, he netted a goal that
gave the Blue Jays a lead they wouldn’t
relinquish.

UNC’s run production in the set was
led by shortstop Brian Roberts and cen
ter fielder Jarrett Shearin.
Roberts hit 5 for 11 in the series with
five RBIs, five runs scored, two triples
and a home run. He also stole four bases
to push his team-leading total to 39 on
the season.
Roberts went 3 for 4 in Friday’s win,
helping the Tar Heels rally from a 4-2
deficit with a triple and a homer, his
sixth of the season. Roberts leads all Tar
Heel regulars with a .389 average.

Justin Leonard came from five strokes
back Sunday with a closing 67 to win
The Players Championship and its
$720,000 first prize by two strokes over
Tom Lehman and Glen Day.
The 25-year-old Leonard now has
four victories on the PGA Tour, includ
ing his win at the British Open last year.
While Leonard was able to draw on
his experience under fire to hold up
down the stretch at the demanding
Stadium Course, Len Mattiace and Day
two guys who have never won fal
tered under the pressure.
At one point on the back nine,
Leonard, Day and Mattiace were tied at

during the three-game series.
North Carolina batted .269 in the
series compared with .346 for the
Cavaliers. Virginia also drew 23 walks in
