Hawkins dropped her match to Sara Rosenblum 7-6,6-3. Tar Heel Netters Pound Paladins By Adam Pom Staff Writer With three victories in a row against top-30 opponents and No. 2 Duke tot ing its 109-game ACC winning streak in to Chapel Hill on Wednesday, North Carolina’s women’s ten nis team could have overlooked Furman. Women’s Tennis Furman 2 UNC 7 But that wasn’t on UNC’s agenda. From top to bottom, the Tar Heels savored the role of favorite by blistering the Paladins 7-2 to extend their winning streak to four matches. “The girls enjoy being the favorite,” UNC coach Roland Thomqvist said. The match was clinched in singles play, as the Tar Heels (9-3) snagged five of six matches. UNC freshman Caroline Hill defeat ed Megan Dunigan 6-2,5-7,7-5 at No. 2 singles to earn UNC’s fifth point of the match and clinch the Tar Heel win. Hill came out of the blocks hot, win ning the first set handily and leading 4- 0 in the second set. But Dunigan would not go down easily, going on a momen tum-shifting run that captured the sec ond set 7-5. But the match’s crucial moments took place with the two players tied at 4-4 in the final set. Dunigan’s critical double fault set up a break point for Hill, and Hill capitalized. But Hill could not secure the victory as Dunigan broke serve, fighting off a match point in the process to even the set at 5-5. The resilient Hill broke serve again, claiming a 6-5 lead she would not relin quish as she made easy work of Dunigan in her second attempt to serve for the match. “1 wasn’t feeling very well out there,” Hill said, “but the key for me was men tal not physical.” Hill was suffering from a strep throat virus that caused her to sit out her scheduled doubles match. UNC’s top-positioned player Jessica Zaganczyk didn’t have an easy time with Furman’s Meredith Moore, finally discarding her 6-4, 7-5. ‘Jessica didn’t have her top game today, but she fought through it,” Thomqvist said. “Her opponent never allowed her to gain momentum.” Zaganczyk’s power from the baseline ran Moore silly in the match’s final games, wearing her out to secure the win. In other singles matches, UNC’s No. 4, 5 and 6 players - junior Cena Hackler, Courtney Zalinski and Jeni Burnette - dominated Furman without surrendering a set. 967-8665 • E.
