Both lost their singles matches on the final day of the ACC Indoor Championships on Monday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Mejia, a freshman, succumbed in straight sets to Wake Forest’s Adria Engel 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the main draw. The plan was for Mejia to work the comers, rolling her forehand out to Engel’s backhand, a shot that Engel appeared to struggle with. But Mejia didn’t have the strength she needed against an opponent Thomqvist anointed as “probably the best player in the conference.” “Her legs were really stiff after all the running she’s been doing,” Thornqvist said. “She just wasn’t strong enough in the finals.” The fifth-seeded Mejia downed yet ranked opponent for Syracuse and the Orangemen responded with an emphat ic win. The game also added to the questions facing Connecticut, which has lost three of its last six and has now doubled its loss total from last season’s national championship run.
