Because a large number of University students choose to reside off campus, many have discovered unique ways of finding places to live. Freshman David Cherryholmes said he found his apartment by researching on the Internet. “It often goes on the Internet a day before it gets in the papers, and I like to be on top of things,” Cherryholmes said. Freshman John Hawkes said he chose not to live in a residence hall because he had a friend who was already off cam pus in Carolina Apartments. “Fie asked me to move in, so I did,” Hawkes said. Senior Krystal Tripe said she “just bumped into” her place of residence at Sunstone Apartments. “I w as pretty much just driving down the road and saw it,” she said. An apartment's character and floor plan are also of interest to residents. Senior Lindsay Rader cited the attrac tiveness of her apartment and the con geniality of the landlords as her reason for renting there. (Ufa Satly (Ear Hrrl “(My roommates and I) knew people that lived there the year before, and thought the rooms were really cute,” she said. “We didn’t think we’d be able to make it in, since it’s mostly for graduate students, but we did.” Although students varied in their methods, their advice on finding off campus housing was the same - begin searching early to find the best deals. Often, the best and cheapest places are the most difficult to get into, Rader said. “To get into (the closest and cheapest places), sometimes you have to get in line at 6 in the morning.” Cherryholmes said leasing an apart ment usually involved a degree of bar gaining. “It’s kind of like buying a car,” said Cherryholmes. “If you take the first thing that comes along, you’re probably not getting the best deal.” Rob Reese, a senior in Carolina Apartments, said that getting the best price was important, but several other factors should also be considered. "Take into account everything: your price range, the size of the rooms and who you’re living with,” he said. “Then make your decision based on all those things.”
