Virginia’s Ed Moses, the nation’s
top-ranked swimmer in the country in
the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke
events, was disqualified in Saturday
morning’s 200 breaststroke qualifier.
According to meet officials, Moses
used flutter kick after his turns at each
wall, which is illegal in the breaststroke.

In the night session, UNC’s Sean
Quinn won the 200 breaststroke final
with a time of 1:57.90.
Then came Moses’s second attempt.
UVa.’s star decided to swim the event
by himself after the meet, and everyone in
the Natatorium stayed around to watch.
Moses didn’t disappoint. He clocked
in with an unofficial time of 1:53.99,
which would have broken his own
ACC record had it counted.
Said UNC coach Frank Comfort of
Moses, “He’s as good as any male ath
lete you’ll see while at North Carolina,
home or away.”
