Durham. NC 27705 or faijto (919)490-6630 WOMEN S BASKETBALL From Page 14 shots in the first half. I maybe got down on myself, and 1 had to regroup in the second half." Barksdale picked up the scoring where Nikki Teasley had left off. Teasley carried UNC with 14 first-half points. But Virginia (23-8) switched to a zone late in the half, and Teasley scored three points in the final 20 minutes. “We went stricdy to that, and then they started to hit 3s, but we needed to disrupt her somehow because she was the only player scoring in the first half,” Virginia coach Debbie Ryan said. Teasley’s role changed from scorer to distributor in the final 20 minutes. She finished with five second-half helpers and assisted on UNC’s final four buckets. Teasley’s fortunes almost didn’t turn out so rosy, though. Robinson stole the ball from her with 1:35 left and raced in for a layup to pull UVa. within 61-60. But Teasley quickly took the ball out of bounds and heaved a pass the length of the court to Juana Brown, who was all alone for a lay-in that pushed UNC’s lead back to three. “I never dropped my head,” Teasley said. “I looked up the court, and there was Juana. So we got it right back, and that’s what it takes, to stay focused and concentrate.” The Tar Heels used such focus and concentration to pull out a similar vic tory against Clemson on Saturday. UNC forwardjackie Higgins tipped in a Teasley miss with 1.2 seconds to go to propel the Tar Heels to a 56-54 win. After the game. Tiger coach Jim Davis said his team deserved an NCAA bid, even if the ACC got only four slots, because Clemson (18-11) beat UNC twice in the regular season. But Hatchell said that because the Tar Heels had beaten the conference’s top two teams - Virginia and Duke - they deserved the nod. That’s almost certain now with UNC’s second win against Virginia. The Tar Heels go for their second vic tory against Duke tonight -one that Hatchell thinks could make UNC a top -4 seed in the NCAAs. “I felt like after yesterday we were in. I feel like for sure we’re in now,” Hatchell said. “If we can win the tournament, and it depends on some upsets in some other areas, we might could play at home, especially the way we’re playing." Pinchbeck clinched the Tar Heel vic- tory in her No. 6 singles match with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win against Lara Naqushbandi, putting UNC ahead of Women's Tennis Harvard 2 UNC 5 Illinois 2 UNC 7 Harvard 5-1. The Crimson then decided to not play a full doubles slate and instead opted to go home early. Only the No. 1 doubles played. UNC’s win against Harvard at Cone- Kenfield Tennis Center completed a weekend of bouncing back. After losing last Wednesday to No. 13 William & Mary, UNC dominated the courts Saturday and Sunday, defeating Illinois 7-2 and Harvard 5-2. Freshman Marlene Mejia continued her winning streak at No. 1 by crushing both Harvard’s Sanaz Gbazal and Illinois’ Simone Kung by the same score of 6-1, 6-0. Mejia is 5-2 overall, and she has won her last four singles matches. “I’ve been feeling better about my matches lately,” Mejia said. “When I lost two matches earlier in the season, both against top-10 girls, I got discouraged. Since I have regained my focus, my playing has improved.” Rounding out the UNC freshman trio, No. 3 Kendrick Bunn won both her tant than her final one. With the score tied at 63 and less than a minute left, Teasley found forward LaQuanda Barksdale open under the rim for what would be the game-winning score. “Nikki, she finds me wherever I am on the court, so I give all the credit to her for finding me,” Barksdale said. Teasley’s big game against the Cavaliers was nothing new for her. In eight career games against Virginia, she has averaged 19.8 points. “It just gets intense, and I get caught up in the moment and get very motivated to play | For Rent | WHY FUSS WITH the bus 7 Large 2-br apt within walking distance from campus A/C. pool. She defeated Illinois’ Carla Rosenberg 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday. Against Harvard, Bunn remained consistent, tacking up another victory against Andrea Magyera (6-4, 6-4). UNC coach Roland Thomqvist said he was proud of his freshman players. “They all work really hard in prac tice,” Thomqvist said. “Some of them weren’t used to the level of intensity, but they have adapted well.” UNC sophomore Caroline Hill and junior Courtney Zalinski, playing at No. 4 and 5, respectively, also denied their competition any wins. They each won both of their singles matches 'his week end but fell short in doubles against Illinois. The Hill-Zalinski combo was defeated by Natasha Loebnitz and Eldina Fazlic, 9-8. Mejia and junior Kristin Koenig also had doubles trouble in the lone match Sunday. Mejia is usually paired with Erin Niebling, who was out for the weekend because of knee problems. Mejia and Koenig lost to Harvard’s Sanja Bajin and Ghazal, 8-4. “All weekend 1 had different doubles partners,” Mejia said. “It was weird playing with different people.” UNC improved to 4-5 on the season with the weekend wins. However, Thomqvist said he was not disappoint ed with the Tar Heels’ performance because of their difficult schedule. UNC has played four top-20 teams. “My plan was always to play our best tennis in April,” Thomqvist said. “April is still a month away.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. against them,” said Teasley, who moved to 7-1 against UVa. in her career. But despite gaudy scoring average against Virginia, Teasley still knows her role with the Tar Heels. “I don’t feel like I have to score for this team to win,” she said. “My job is to lead the team and I think it did that.” And the Tar Heels have followed Teasley’s lead into tonight’s ACC cham pionship game.
