PPD DEVELOPMENT Conducting clinical studies since 1983
Playing without its second-leading
scorer and top defenseman, UNC
employed a different strategy than the
one that led the Tar Heels past the likes
of nationally-ranked Navy and
Pennsylvania.
“We tried to hold the ball more
today,” senior Chase Martin said. “I
think the team tried to play smarter this
afternoon. We were attempting to pos
sess the ball better.”
Regardless of their slightly altered
style, the Tar Heels were clearly the
superior lacrosse team. UNC demon
strated a quickness and skillfulness that
Ohio State could not match -a fact evi
denced by the Fetzer Field scoreboard.
The Buckeyes trailed their entire stay
in Chapel Hill, falling behind 3-0 and
going in at the half trailing 6-3.
As usual, UNC led at halftime, but the
team’s scoring came from a variety of
players -a rarity for the 2000 Tar Heels.
Coming into the contest, 44 percent
of UNC’s 57 goals came from either
Martin (13) or Sonke (12). However,
UNC coach Dave Klarmann’s squad

distributed the scoring among nine play
ers against the Buckeyes.
Martin (four) and Kevin Mehm (two)
tallied multiple goals for UNC, while
Crofton, Ryan Damon, Austin Garrison,
Tim Gosier, Pat Jackson, Andy Jonas
and Steven Will scored once for the Tar
Heels.
UNC’s offensive attack was not the
only facet of the Tar Heels’ effort to flex
its collective muscle.
On defense, UNC’s starting team
held OSU in check until being relieved
late in the fourth period. The Tar Heels
held the Buckeyes to 15 shots on goal
through three periods - compared to 32
of their own - while goalie Kris
Blindenbacher turned in another stellar
performance between the pipes, allow
ing only four goals in 51 minutes and 15
seconds of action.
“Our defense was great today,”
Martin said. “We played incredibly on
that end of the field.”
