Vols Become Mad Hatters
If the Tar Heels are looking to stop
Tennessee, they might need to look no
further than the Volunteers’ headgear.
Inspired by the “Synergy Stick” that
helped Tennessee football coach Philip
Fulmer and his team to a national title in
1998, the basketball Vols have a “Synergy
Hat” to help them focus on winning.
“When everything else failed, they
could concentrate on that,” Tennessee
coach Jerry Green said of the stick used
by Fulmer’s team. “(Tennessee forward
Ron) Slay had an old hat sitting on top
of the TV for three months. They said,
‘There it is. There’s our synergy hat.’”
