News Top Stories From the State, Nation and World In The News Police Mull Connection Between 7 Slayings FAYETTEVILI.K - Investigators looking for clues in the unsolved mur ders of seven Fayetteville area prosti tutes believe some of the cases may be linked, but they stop short of talking about a serial killer. “It would be a disservice not to com pare them and say there is no connec tion,” said police Capt. Brad Chandler. The latest victim was Amanda Bagley, 21, whose badly decomposed body was found March 7 in woods off Bragg Boulevard. Authorities have not been able to determine how Bagley died, but several of the victims were strangled. The body of Patricia A. Lapinskes of Lumberton was found in a downtown parking lot less than four months before Bagley’s was discovered. Lapinskes, 50, died of asphyxiation, possibly from strangulation, according to medical examiners. The first unsolved murder dates back to August 1987, when 25- year-old Brenda Melvin was found strangled in a motel bathtub. But inves tigators say they have yet to establish a concrete link between the killings. The talks broke down Saturday, sending the case back to U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson in Washington, who last fall issued a find ing of fact that Microsoft used its monopoly powers to thwart competi tion. A decision on the lawsuit is expect ed any day, and ifjackson sides with the government, he will begin the lengthy process of determining a penalty that could include a breakup or restructuring of the company. Sources said government lawyers no longer were insisting on a breakup, but that Microsoft refused to accept propos als submitted by the Justice Department and 19 states who sued the company. Even before the states made new pro posals Friday, “It was clear Microsoft was rejecting the government’s propos al and insisting on their own approach,” said an individual familiar with the gov ernment’s position, who would not be quoted by name. Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates con tended Saturday that “it became impos sible to settle because the Department of Justice and the states were not working together.” Rebel Flag Opponents Head to Columbia, S.C. CHARLESTON, S.C. - More than 600 people set out Sunday on a five-day, 120-mile protest march to Columbia to urge state lawmakers to move the Confederate Flag from the Statehouse dome. “Take it down!,” chanted some marchers. “The people of South Carolina - white and African-American - w ant the flag to come down,” said Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., who had the idea for the march. “The purpose is to say the people of South Carolina are in step, and we want the Legislature to get in step with the ah? Daily aar Hrrl people of South Carolina,” said the mayor, who carried the blue state flag with its white palmetto tree and crescent as he led marchers into the street. The marchers will walk only during daylight hours and plan to arrive in Columbia for a rally on Thursday, when pro-flag supporters have also scheduled a Statehouse rally. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has called for a tourism boycott of the state, saying the Confederate flag above the Statehouse in Columbia is a racist emblem. Flag defenders say it is a symbol of Southern heritage and honors Confederate war dead. Murder Inquiry Persists; Death Toll Reaches 924 KANUNGU, Uganda - “Let us go and burn.” The ominous words, scrawled across a blackboard in a sect compound where 530 people were incinerated two weeks ago, might have sufficed as a neat, if tragic, explanation for the fate of followers of a Christian fringe sect whose end-of-the-world pre diction had failed to come true. Then, three days later, the mutilated, strangled bodies of six men were dis covered stuffed into a latrine pit nearby. That led to a search that unearthed 388 more bodies this week and transformed an apparent mass suicide into the dead liest cult tragedy of modern times. No one is certain how the killings of 924 or more people were orchestrated, all within a 50-mile radius among luxu riant green hills and volcanic lakes in southwestern Uganda. But police think they know who masterminded them: Credonia Mwerinde, a 48-year-old sect leader known as “the Programmer.” Authorities believe she is still alive and on the run. “It was that Mwerinde who had all those people killed,” said the Rev. Paul Ikazire, a Roman Catholic priest who had left the church and joined Mwerinde’s sect from 1991 to 1994. Associated Press
