Greenberg went 2-for-5 at the plate and knocked in two runs. Duo Lead Tar Heels to Another ‘W Bv Joe Disney Staff Writer In the grand scheme of the 2000 sea son, a win against Davidson won’t mat ter that much for the North Carolina baseball team. • For Ryan Earey and Eric Henderson, it meant a lot. Although the 11-5 victo ry Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium will Baseball Davidson 5 UNC II appear as just another ‘W’ in the win column, Earey and Henderson used the game to come out of their slumps. Earey, the UNC designated hitter, went l-for-9 in the weekend series against Clemson. “I really wanted to watch some pitch es all the way in," Earey said. “I thought I did that for a couple of at bats tonight. Finally, I saw a pitch I could hit and hit if." He must have seen something he really liked in the seventh inning when he went deep for a three-run homer, his ninth of the year. ** The blast over the left-field wall pro imSeUreed. exchanqe.com, .. flu 1111 Uplj mm Read y toturn y° urbooksmarts JL P W into Wall Street smarts? V X V-/ L JL4 duced the last three runs of the game and ended the Wildcats’ (19-17) hopes for a comeback. “With the last at bat, hopefully that sparked him a little bit, which is what he needed,” UNC coach Mike Fox said. UNC pitcher Henderson also gained confidence from a strong outing Wednesday night. In his previous three decisions, Henderson was winless, including a loss to Clemson last Saturday. After starter Scott Autrey came out of the game in the fifth inning, Henderson went on to pitch 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball to earn his fifth win of the season. “The win definitely helps, but more important were the innings,” Henderson said. “I changed my focus a little bit. I was trying to be too fine and getting ahead of the hitters. That always helps out.” Henderson also struck out four of the seven Wildcats he faced. UNC shortstop Clay Hooper got the Tar Heels (28-6) on the board first with a single to left field that scored right fielder Dan Moylan. Davidson then answered with two runs of its own in the top half of the sec ond inning with a two-run homer bv right fielder Ryan Stroker. UNC, not to be outdone on its home turf, scored two more in the bottom of the second to regain the lead. The first run came off a lead-off home run by freshman Adam Greenberg. The next came off a sacri fice fly by Tyrell Godwin. Both Greenberg and Godwin record ed triples in the game. Greenberg’s three-bagger in the sixth inning drove in the eventual game winner, in the person of Russ Adams. The win gives the Tar Heels an added boost as they head into a week end series with Wake Forest in Winston- Salem. “I was pleased with our effort,” Fox said. “1 thought we played hard.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu.
