(Thp Saily (Tar Hrrl Tar Heels' Home Finale Spoiled by Wake Forest By Kelly Lusk Staff Writer Laughter filled the North Carolina women’s tennis team’s locker room after its last home match against Wake Forest. This seemed like a somewhat odd -response, considering the No. 2 Demon Deacons pounded the Tar Heels 8-1. .The defeat was the third conference loss in a row for *TTNC - not a very funny joke. But the Tar Heels (9-11,2- Women’s Tennis Wake Forest .. .8 UNC I 5 in the ACC) could go easy on them selves because their loss had nothing to do with poor effort. “Our preparation for this match was the best we’ve had all year,” UNC sophomore Caroline Hill said. “We won’t be satisfied with a loss, but instead of getting down, we’ll use it to fire us up.” Freshman Kendrick Bunn, playing at No. 4, was the lone Tar Heel to win in singles for the third match in a row. Bunn extended her winning streak in singles to five matches, defeating Maren Haus 4-6, :6-3,6-0. Summer Jobs W n The Chape! NC 27511 469-9911 “It’s not as enjoyable being the only one to win if the team doesn’t win as well,” Bunn said. “I’d rather me lose and the team win." Senior Jessica Zaganczyk lost her final match in the Tar Heels’ domain. She fell in straight sets to Bea Bielik, who is ranked No. 19 in the country. “I’ve been in a slump, and she had a big serve,” Zaganczyk said. “She was a beast.” Freshman Marlene Mejia was back playing at No. 1 after being out for three matches with tendinitis in her knee. Adria Engel, ranked fifth in the nation, domi nated Mejia and swept the sets 6-2,6-0. “It was hard to come out against No. 5 without recent match play,” Mejia said. “But you have to suck it up.” Despite the fact that the match was decided at the end of singles with the score 5-1, the teams still played doubles. The Demon Deacons (17-1, 7-0) contin ued on their tirade and swept doubles. “Their top seeds were the best we’ve seen,” UNC coach Roland Thornqvist said. “We couldn’t have done more.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu. Summer Jobs Women's Lacrosse Slips Past PSU From Staff Reports BALTIMORE - Sophomore Kellie Thompson tied a school record by scor ing six goals to lead the No. 6 North Carolina women’s lacrosse team past No. 16 Penn State 14-13 on Thursday. The Tar Heels, who jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, held off a late Nittany Lion surge to improve to 8-4. Thompson, who also had an assist, became the fifth player in UNC history to reach the back of the net six times in a single game. Gray McNair added two goals for the Tar Heels. Late Wednesday: Baseball Beats 49ers Tyrell Godwin and Ryan Mathews had three hits apiece to help the North Carolina baseball team rally from a 7-4 deficit to defeat UNC-Charlotte 14-10. The Tar Heels (30-9) took the lead for good by scoring five runs in the fifth inning on three hits. North Carolina loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter and then tied the game on Godwin’s two-run single to left-center field.
