GJltr Satly (Tar Heel Transition Keys Terps' Run vs. UNC Maryland's women's lacrosse team pressured the Tar Heels into 17 turnovers and scored on two-thirds of its shots. By Matt Tfrry Staff Writer COLLEGE PARK, \ld. - There’s no . secret to the success of the Maryland “women’s lacrosse program. Winners of 53 of their last 56 games, the No. 1 Terrapins like to run and gun, not allowing the opposing defense to set ; tie down and defend them. In the championship game of the ACC tournament, the sixth-ranked Tar Heels tried to use patient ball control to neutralize the Terps’ potent transition game. As the 17-6 final score shows, the strategy worked to no avail. Throughout the game, North Carolina straggled on the offensive end and kept looking back only to see red shirts streaking toward their goal. . “We’re just as fast as them,” UNC HehHWanted Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Healthcare Centen Is looking for a full time social SERVICES DIRECTOR. With her defense often up field, sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Coyne was frequently left alone to handle Jen Adams - the nation’s leading scorer - and the rest of Maryland’s attack in one on-one situations. Adams finished with six goals and two assists, posting four points in each half. “They did a good job in transition; we did not do a good job,” UNC coach Jenny Slingluff Levy said. The Terps had a field day at the offen sive end. Even though the Tar Heels out shot the Terrapins 28-24, Maryland made the most of its scoring opportuni ties, scoring on two-thirds of its shots. Maryland’s five leading scorers - Adams, Allison Comito, Quinn Carney, Christie Jenkins and Kristin Sommar - all have more points on the season than UNC’s leading point-getter, Kellie Thompson. Of the Terps’ top five, only Carney scored fewer then three points. When the Tar Heels tried to reduce their deficit, the Terps often went right back in the other direction. Maryland was the beneficiary of 17 North Carolina turnovers, causing 10 of them. “We knew exactly what we had to do today,"Jenkins said. “We just waited for them to come to us.” North Carolina had enough the first time it came after Maryland this season, defeating the Terrapins 14-13 in quadru ple overtime March 5. Maryland’s 13 goals equaled its lowest output of the season, and Adams’ four points (three goals and an assist) were two full points below her season average. Meanwhile, Coyne turned in her best performance of the season, turning away 14 Terrapin shots. Things were different Sunday. “We had to take those thoughts (of the first game) out of our mind,” Maryland coach Cindy Timchal said. “Every game is anew beginning." Tar Heels Earn Tournament Honors UNC defender Jennie Voishan, along with attacker Kristin Off (two goals and two assists) and midfielder Amy Havrilla (four goals and one assist), were named to the ACC all-tournament team.
