6 Thursday, May 25, 2000 Tar Heel Teams Keep Competing After Classes End UNC's Spring Athletes Earn PersonS Awards By Hal Wansley Staff Writer While most students were out work ing on their tans, many of North Carolina’s spring sports teams saw their seasons come to an end. But not before gaining some regional and national recognition. Tar Heel golfer Max Harris tore up the greens in Ohio to help the men’s golf team advance to the NCAA Championships. Fellow Tar Heel golfer Marcy Newton will be UNC’s lone rep resentative at the women’s NCAA Championships. In addition, a slew of Tar Heel track and field team members qualified for the NCAA Championships. Finally, several UNC women’s lacrosse players earned national accolades. Harris Propels Golf to Ninth Place Tie The North Carolina men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Saturday after fin ishing in a tie for ninth at the NCAA East Regional held at Glenmaura National Golf Course in Moosic, Pa. Clemson post ed a 54-hole, 19- over-par 871 to win the rain plagued event. UNC golfer Max Harris shot a final-round 68 to finish in a tie for third place at the NCAA East Regional. Senior Max Harris led the way for UNC. His final day 68 gave him a 214 for the tournament and a tie for third place in the individual standings. Georgia senior Michael Morrison took home top honors with a one-under par total of 212. The top 11 teams qualified for the NCAA Championship, held at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Ala. North Carolina’s Whitten Meares posted a 75 on Saturday to give him a final tally of 226, good for a tie for 43rd place. Newton advances to the NCAA Championships, which will be played May 14-17 in Sunriver, Ore. Kari Damron of Purdue and Lisa Strom of Ohio State tied for the top spot as both carded even par 216 totals. The Tar Heels finished in 17th place in the East Regional with a total score of 931. UNC failed to advance to the NCAA Championships. Duke captured the team tide with an 897 total after firing a 295 in the final round. Several Tar Heels Qualify for NCAAs North Carolina junior Jeff Ellis earned an NCAA automatic qualifica tion in the men’s 400-meter hurdles Saturday at the Georgia Tech Reebok Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. Ellis finished ninth with a time of 50.00 seconds, the second fastest in school history. The women had four NCAA provi sional qualifying marks on Saturday. DeAnne Davis set anew personal record as she took fourth place in the triple jump with a distance of 43-6 1/2. Joy Ganes took third in the high jump with a height of 5-10 1/2. Also, Lutisha Shittu finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.30 and the 4-X-400 meter team finished in 3:38.90, the second fastest time of the season. On Friday, Ola Sesay earned NCAA automatic qualification in the long jump. Sesay won the event with a mark of 21- 5 1/4, fourth best in UNC history. Sesay became the third automatic qualification for UNC this season joining Trish Nervo in the women’s 5000 m and Kestutis Celiesius in the men’s javelin. Beth George earned an NCAA pro visional qualification in the 1500 m in 4:22.95. 6 Softball Players Recognized Four UNC softball players were named to the All-Southeast Region first team and two others made the second team. Catcher Natalie Anter, outfielder Jen Klesaris, third baseman Kelly Ramsey and shortstop Michelle Semmes all made the first team. Second baseman Crystal Henderson and pitcher Radara McHugh earned second-team all-region honors. The Tar Heels had hoped to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament but found out Sunday that they did not make the 48-team field. 3 Women's Lacrosse Players Honored North Carolina women’s lacrosse players Porter Wilkinson, Meghann Mohler and Kellie Thompson were named to the 2000 Brine/Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Assocation All- America Team on Monday. Wilkinson, a defender, was named to the first team. The sophomore was North Carolina’s defensive leader and earned first-team All-ACC honors. She also was named first-team All-South region by the IWLCA. Mohler, a midfielder, earned second team honors, as she ranked second on the UNC team in goals and points. The senior also led the team in ground balls (49) and draw controls (35). She earned All-ACC honors for the second season in a row and was named first-team All- South region by the IWLCA. Thompson, a sophomore, received third-team recognition. The attacker led North Carolina in goals (36), assists (20) and points (56) in 2000, establishing personal career highs in each category. She also was named second-team All- South region by the IWLCA. Men's Tennis Bows Out of NCAAs The ninth ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team (21-5) earned its first trip to the NCAA Final 16 since 1993 by defeating No. 20 North Carolina 4- 2 in the second round of the NCAA tourna ment on May 14th. The loss in the regional final ended an improved season for UNC. The Tar Heels finished 18-6 after going 11-14 in 1999. Tennessee won the doubles point and three singles matches to secure the win. The Tar Heels won at No. 1 singles as 22nd-ranked Tripp Phillips topped 24th ranked Mark Parsons 6-4, 6-1. North Carolina’s Trystan Meniane defeated Tate Roberts 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Sonke Named ACC Player of Week North Carolina attackmanjeff Sonke was named the ACC men’s lacrosse Player of the Week after leading the Tar Heels to a season-ending 11-10 victory over Lehigh on May 4. BAD ZERO: Afumde* af hail* an yaivt dead. The win gave UNC head coach Dave Klarmann his 100th career victory in his final game as the Tar Heels’ coach. Sonke was the offensive standout for the Tar Heels (8-6, 0-4) against the Mountain Hawks as he tied his career high with seven points in the contest, matching his seven-point performance against Navy earlier in the year. . The junior found the back of the net on six occasions, which was a career high, and equaled the second-most goals in a single game by a North Carolina player since 1984. On the year, Sonke ranked fourth in the ACC in scoring with 49 points for a 3.77 per game average was second in goals with 33. Rowing Ends Year Ranked No. 23 The North Carolina women’s rowing team finished the season ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams for the first time in the three-year history of the var sity program. The Tar Heels are tied for 23rd among Division I varsity eights in the final Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/U.S. Rowing National Collegiate Coaches Poll of the 2000 sea son, released on May 17. Brown University tops the poll, which includes 20 spots and others receiving votes. UNC is tied at 23rd with Cornell and Texas. “We’re pleased to finish the season in the top 25 nationally,” UNC coachjoel Furtek said. “And while the ranking is for the varsity eight, we know that the hard work and dedication of all our ath letes is reflected in that speed.” The Sports Editor can be reached at sports@unc.edu.
